Is all debate subject to controversy?

Debate Information

In the 1900's, if you supported black rights, you could be killed or put in prison for bringing such an issue to debating. However, today's society is a much different battleground, and considering that we used to have the Fairness Doctrine, do you believe that debate that is controversial should be left unspoken, or that debate with controversy should be accepted despite problems it could cause?

No, some things can land you in jail for even suggesting.

Anything pro-terrorism or pro-pedophilia is good to stay away from. When it comes to religion, avoid advocating cults or extremists.

Well, isn't that the purpose of debating?
I am no longer active on DebateIsland or any debate website. Many things I have posted here and on other sites (Such as believing in the flat Earth theory or other conspiracy theories such as those that are about the Las Vegas Shooting or 9/11) do not reflect on my current views.

That's debatable.  :)  I'd say no, that's why there are taboos.

I would argue that if a debate topic is controversial, it would depend solely on the circumstance. If it involved something like prisons or abortion or government, I think that would be fine to debate about. The types of debates I'm worried about are when debates dealing with controversy go out of line to make threats. It is at this point in which a person needs to step in and end the debate, no matter who is on top at the point.
