Donald Trump said Chrysler is leaving Mexico. It isn't

Debate Information

Another half truth by Trump.

Speaking at women’s event in Washington, President Donald Trump pointed to this good news as proof of his policies.

"We’re making incredible progress," he said Jan. 16. "Toyota is now moving back. Mexico — it’s very interesting — Chrysler is leaving Mexico and moving back to Michigan. You haven’t heard that one in a while."

In this fact-check, Polifact looked at whether Chrysler is leaving Mexico and returning to Michigan.

Chrysler is shifting truck production to the United States, but not at the expense of jobs or plants in Mexico. So the claim is half truth at best. Words matter mr. President...

The Mexican plant will start making another kind of vehicle, and the company expects no change in the number of workers.

There is no question though that the company’s billion dollar investment will add many new jobs in Michigan where Chrysler has long had a presence.

It's a technicality.  Chrysler is making a major commitment to US and moving jobs domestically.

In spirit Trump was right and it's  major win for his policy.  However, words matter and it's important to draw distinction between facts and wishful thinking.  I agree with

Trump said that Chrysler is leaving Mexico and moving back to Michigan. The company does plan to spend $1 billion to shift production of Ram trucks from Saltillo, Mexico, to Warren, Mich. However, this is no zero-sum game where a U.S. gain is Mexico’s loss.

The Mexican plant will start making another kind of vehicle, and the company expects no change in the number of workers.

There is no question though that the company’s billion dollar investment will add many new jobs in Michigan where Chrysler has long had a presence.

We rate this claim Half True.

Polifact gave Trump half credit for intent, which in this case is more than fair.

I am still at a loss why there is no basic fact checking for Trump's speeches and Twitter messages.  It's easy enough to make sure such nuances are cleared, avoiding embarrassing corrections.

Trump has a tendency to exaggerate and make himself sound important. It's ludicrous for him to make claims that are easily checked to be incorrect.  I am unsure shy polifact marked this claim as a half truth.  It looks like a full lie to me.

    It depends on the actual quote being cited.  If the quote is the off-the-cuff remark made for a limited audience at a women's event, then it's technically wrong.  If it's the tweet he sent out to the general public;

    then he is correct.

Something Donald does not realize is that wages are a cost of the production, not a boon. In a way, it is more effective to keep the production in Mexico, where it is much cheaper, bringing more profit to the American companies and, as a consequence, customers - than to pull the production back into the US. We are a highly technological country, and Americans should focus on doing a higher-level jobs than manual assembly.

2,500 Americans got new jobs, which (provided they are qualified enough) they would be able to get domestically in any case. Hundreds millions Americans lost the ability to buy cheaper trucks because their production cost increased, competition weakened and the supply/demand balance shifted. Did Americans win as a result? Obviously not.

When Americans have trouble buying cars from US automakers or in any industry for this example as well as the companies being incentivized to leave the country with these tax breaks. Plus now automation, these jobs are never coming back like the once were and will never expand just like coal.

Obama was the queen of half truths and nonfacts. He's still spewing them to this day. Anything else?
