Public transport fare can double in most US cities with only marginally less people riding it less

Debate Information

I will debate that as much as people complain about cost of trains and public transportation in general, it is actually highly price inelastic - meaning even if prices were to double almost everyone will still use it roughly the same.  In many cases people use it for commute, and it is still in most cases much cheaper and convinient than other options.

That is not true. If a person spends $10 a day on a 2 way commute, in a year that will be around $3,600. In 10 years that will be over $30,000. That person can purchase a luxury car for around $30,000 and spend the remainder on gas cash. Long term cost shows that it may be a smarter decision to commute on a car, and the budget even enables them to commute on a luxury car.

@joecavalry, here are additional  cons of a car vs public transportation:
    - parking cost
    - wear and tear
    - can read, check/send emails on a train, making that time more productive
