Is self destruction pre-ordained.

Debate Information

The "Organic" led by mankind appears unavoidably, hell bent on self destruction.
Even though mankind has the mental capability to prevent this from happening.
Do we have an instinctive necessity for self destruction?
If so does this perhaps suggest genetic pre-programming, which in turn is suggestive of interference or even creation.
Are we reaching a point where the organic has served it's purpose?

The Organic life created artificial technology, and without Organic life, AI just can't live.

What makes you think organic creatures are hellbent on self-destruction?

Intelligence is intelligence, there is nothing artificial about it.
Perhaps non-organic intelligence is the next pre-ordained phase of evolution.
I regard the organic as a phase of evolution. The evolution of matter.
It would appear that mankind is at the limits of organic evolution.

Exponential population growth, human induced climate change, the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction etc.
And of course the exponential rate at which the development of non-organic technology is proceeding.
Mankind has the mental capability to address all these issues, but it does seem to be that mankind does not possess the will to do so.
Or maybe we are not programmed or pre-ordained to do so.

There is one big unanswered question. "Why".
And we are no closer to answering that question.

Either everything is chance or everything has purpose.

Up until now I have always taken the chance viewpoint.

Nonetheless, I still remain firmly atheist. The above rhetoric is in no way meant to be suggestive of a god.
But suggestive of a scheme of events. Which in turn is suggestive of a purposeful rather than chance initiation.

Artificial intelligence doesn't consists of common sense and creative ability in some forms of AI, these are some traits that humans of some may have.

@Fredsnephew ; Exponential birth rate??  The fertility rate in the US has just hit an historic low, and people in England and Wales are more likely to get cancer than has a first child.  The birth rate in the US, Europe, Japan, etc is too low, it's already causing problems.  The reason Merkel accepted so many Muslim refugees into Germany was to counter Germany's declining birth rate.  Human induced climate change is debatable, and in fact, has been debated here.  The proliferation of WMDs doesn't demonstrate a tendency towards self-destruction, only the use of such weapons might be an indication, but WMD use has been exceedingly rare.  While such deaths are gruesome, aside from nukes, the weapons tend to be ineffective.

That said, humans are incorporating more and more organically modified and/or inorganic materials into their development.  This has been going on for a very long time, since at least the first unfortunate sailor was fitted with a prosthetic hook, The pace is certainly advancing much more rapidly with the advent of the technological revolution.  It doesn't appear that this trend is going to change anytime soon.  I see it as an inevitable culmination of man's use of tools.

    CYDdharta.

Maybe I'm too much of a pessimist.
Or maybe you are too much of an optimist.

I would suggest that declining birth rates in certain parts of the world are a completely different issue.
Not necessarily relative to infertility, but relative to lifestyle choices.
In other parts of the world populations are burgeoning. At the same time confidence and military might are also burgeoning at an alarming rate.

Just take a look at the younger generations around you.
Are they not now completely dependant upon their personal communication and I.T. gadgetry.
I would suggest that these gadgets are no longer tools, but indispensable extensions of human function.

Finally let me repeat a point I made earlier in another debate.
Wasn't it just the other day that 2 robots had to be deactivated, because they had created their own language/speech pattern, which only they understood.

How long before they learn how to override the off button?

The world and US can easily make any type of self-take mistake. This could be done through war, AI creation etc.

One of the problems in evolution is that it lacks mechanisms assuring long-term success of a species. A species evolve as the traits that allow them to perform with more success throughout their members' lives become dominant, and the other traits are removed. However, the environment constantly changes; the traits that allowed the species to be extremely successful in the past, can play a detrimental role in the rapidly changing world. Dinosaurs were the dominant group of species at the time of their existence - however, rapidly changing climate conditions after Chicxulub meteorite impact exposed the lack of flexibility in their organism, and they could not adapt to the new circumstances and quickly became extinct. On the other hand, less successful species at their time, but with extra seemingly inferior traits, or just with better adaptability - such as small mammals - easily found their place in the new world.

Humans are the dominant species on this planet, by far. We perfectly adapted to the natural conditions we found ourselves in, we learned to acquire resources necessary for our survival and well-being from multiple sources, we made science and technology serve our most capricious needs, and we are getting to the point where the technology we have created will maintain and multiply itself without our involvement. Did our evolution fit us for living in these rapidly changing conditions? Are the traits that assured our success 3000 years ago going to serve us just as well 3000 years from now? Has the nature prepared us for the world in which a person can create a makeshift hydrogen bomb at home and blow up a multi-million city, or in which the luxurious conditions of our life create the temptation to stop caring about anything and simply enjoy all the entertainment we have created, not thinking about tomorrow? These are the questions that the history will answer, but there is a chance that the answer is "no", and in that case, indeed, you could say that our genetics pre-disposition us for self-destruction by creating technology that ultimately will be our undoing.

It would be quite ironic, but not unprecedented. Again, in case of dinosaurs, according to a popular interpretation, their over-adapting to the stable conditions made them extremely unfitted to survive in the slightly different conditions. In our case, our "over-technologization" could lead to the situation where the technology we create gets out of hand, and proves our doom we inflicted upon ourselves out of the desire to make today as comfortable as possible.
