Should your life be celebrated, or should death just sneak up on you?
Debate Information
Hello:
I'm getting old. I don't wanna force my nonfunctional body onto my relatives. So, no. I don't want it sprung on me. I want to plan it. Some states let you do that.. Others require that you die lying in your own sh*t. I ain't gonna do that..
I think anyone who has cared for their loved one who was in hospice care, especially their spouse, would be inclined to agree with you. There is no dignity in that what so ever.
I think that the moment one's life becomes not worth living is the moment one decides that it is. Conversely, one can be stubborn and never give up on life, and then even the worst torture is preferable to oblivion. I have the latter outlook.
You certainly should have the right to give up your life - in fact, it makes no sense to outlaw suicide, for someone who is dead cannot be prosecuted (and prosecuting those who have failed at the suicide attempt is one of the cruelest things imaginable). At the same time, in my view doing so would be the biggest mistake you have ever made in your life - pretty much, by definition.
I do not care if I am reduced to a brain in a vat... I will be the brain that will plot its escape for as long as it is alive! To take me out, you have to terminate all of my biological functions. And even then I might find a way out.
Life can be celebrated in many meaningful ways, both in everyday moments and during special occasions:
Hello Jules:
It would be nice if we could live long and healthy lives, and then drop dead on the tennis court. But, that ain't the way most of us go. The death with dignity laws don't apply to healthy old farts anyway. It applies to people with terminal illness's who face a painful, imminent death. You must know that I'm speaking about those people. No?
