207 years ago, wow.  It's a nice reflection point today, as we are on a pivotal point how we want to deal with AI and Genetic Engineering.  Should we take a Luddite approach, fully embrace it, or regulate it?
  1. How should we approach Emerging Technology today (AI and Genetic Engineering)?

  • Just like it failed 207 years ago, it can't be stopped now.  AI is coming so the answer is somewhere in between embracing it and regulating it.

  • The original Luddites destroyed factories to keep their jobs. Neo-Luddites reject all technology for... things.

  • Its coming. We can't embrace it blindly or destroy it blindly. We must regulate it to limit the dangers rather than reject it or ignore the dangers.
  • It is a general misconception, to infer that that Luddites rejected technology.

Luddites were simply protesters who feared their livelihoods were under threat.

A consequence of their protests, was damage to weaving machinery.

The development of  the steam locomotive was well under way at this time,

There was no Luddite rejection of this technology.
