Evo-Devo can explain much about the diversity of complex life.

Debate Information

Evo-Devo is the process by which changes in gene regulation relating to embryological development can drive evolution.

Specifically, the modulation of a few common genes and changes in their expression can explain the wide diversity of life, as they allow basic body plan genes to be shifted, shuffles or changes, through relatively minor genetic changes.

This seems to be a manifestation of the general principle often referred to as the "butterfly effect": small variations on a large time scale can lead to extreme differences in the outcome. A few shifted genes or the gene interaction mechanism tweaks lead to a slightly different genetic structure, which leads to a slightly more different organism, which leads to a slightly more different result of the natural selection, which leads to a slightly different species, which evolves in a slightly different way... Multiply all the "slightly", and you get a factor so big that it can explain the differences between an ant and a whale - with just several genes changed in a few common ancestors hundreds millions years ago.

Makes one think how many opportunities we will have when artificial rapid genetic modification becomes an everyday occurrence. Will we be able to create principally new species, unlike anything the Earth has ever had? Will we be able to modify ourselves so much, we will not be recognizable by non-modified humans? The 21st century is looking to be very exciting for Earthen biosphere.
