  • Can you justify human rights?

    what are gay rights?  the right to be gay?  thought it wasn't a choice?  I have 17+1 ways to justify my rights LOL  Establishing and recognizing rights just reduces force and violence.  Because if you didn't accept what I consider my rights that's what I would probably have to use to see things my way.

    I asked about all human rights, actually. Nor did you justify them. I'm asking if you can provide a case for rights.

    you're getting philosophical because anything of value has value based on some kind of emotional reasoning if you follow it back far enough.  One of the first steps is determining if humans and life have any value at all.  So depending on perspective the answer could be yes or no.  Rights are a social construct, agreement or contract that the majority have accepted as so, depending on country etc.  I'm sure there's already a thread about rights, positive and negative etc

    Not everything is based on emotional reasoning, like logic. It's almost as if rights are an irrational and modern fiction.

    You say ....It's almost as if rights are an irrational and modern fiction

    My reply .... In some peoples minds obviously , but they still enjoy the privileges of such irrational fictions

    Yep. The only reason some people dislike gays is because of either religion, xenophobia or brainwashing.

    Xenophobia?  What does sexuality have to do with race?

    @Orthodox_Christian ;

    Read the writings of the Founding Fathers. Rights are advocated for on the basis that they guarantee the individual the opportunity to build their life by their own design and not be controlled by other individuals, who believe they know better than this individual what they want. There is no objective basis behind rights, but there is a subjective basis stating that the vast majority of individuals do not like it when someone else forces them to do something against their will.

    To put it plainly, the mentality behind human rights is "I live my life, you live yours, so I will leave you be and you should leave me be".

    Authoritarian people, such as Christian/Muslim fundamentalists, nationalists or socialists, do not believe in rights, they believe in privileges that the society can grant its members, which is the exact opposite of rights. Again, there is nothing objectively wrong with this - but, I think, the disparity between liberal right-based democratic systems, and all other systems, both nowadays and throughout the whole history, in terms of level of culture and quality of life, demonstrates what we as a species in general prefer.

    Nothing is guaranteed! Our commitment to human rights is just that, a commitment. It's a social construct. The only reason we have any rights is because of a social contract that we keep with ourselves, but there is no governing force, or scientific fact, or religious law that can truly garauntee our rights. It's not written in some holy pillar, somwhere in the cosmos that we are garaunteed anything. Your argument against gay rights, is impotent. You're willing to argue against your own right to exist (because that's NOT garaunteed, that also falls in line with our social contract, and nothing else) all for the sake of making a case against gay rights. That's not an argument, it's just hate! If you think you represent the god that I was taught about when I was a child, you should probably readjust your tinfoil hat.
