No, Islam isn't, but the people who opened fire on a bus are certainly violent.

I think it is almost always a mistake to generalize people too much.  To call an entire people of a religion violent becomes dividing and usually wrong.  Our Old Testament has a lot of violence in it, would you consider the Jewish people violent? I know there is a current war, and some people might describe them as violent, but the holocaust tells a completely different story.
I think many people in the middle east are angry and that makes them dangerous.  I do not know if they even completely understand what they are angry about, fights that have been going on for hundreds of years.

In Sura 9 we read, “But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the pagans wherever ye find them, and seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem [of war]; but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practice regular charity, then open the way for them: for God is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful” (Sura 9:5). Also in Sura 9, “Fight those who believe not in God nor the Last Day, nor hold that forbidden which hath been forbidden by God and His Apostle, nor acknowledge the religion of Truth, [even if they are] of the People of the Book [Christians and Jews], until they pay the jizya [tribute] with willing submission, and feel themselves subdued” (Sura 9:29).

In addition to the teachings of the Koran, Muslims also follow the Hadith, a supposedly inspired record of Muhammad’s words and actions. The Hadith explains how Muhammad instructed his commander when sent out on an expedition, “When you meet your enemies who are polytheists, invite them to three courses of action. If they respond to any one of these, you also accept it and withhold yourself from doing them any harm. Invite them to [accept] Islam; if they respond to you, accept it from them and desist from fighting against them. . . . If they refuse to accept Islam, demand from them the jizya. If they agree to pay, accept it from them and hold off your hands. If they refuse to pay the tax, seek Allah’s help and fight them” (Sahih Muslim, Book 19, Number 4294).

Quran (4:95) - "Not equal are those of the believers who sit (at home), except those who are disabled (by injury or are blind or lame, etc.), and those who strive hard and fight in the Cause of Allah with their wealth and their lives. Allah has preferred in grades those who strive hard and fight with their wealth and their lives above those who sit (at home).Unto each, Allah has promised good (Paradise), but Allah has preferred those who strive hard and fight, above those who sit (at home) by a huge reward " This passage criticizes "peaceful" Muslims who do not join in the violence, letting them know that they are less worthy in Allah's eyes. It also demolishes the modern myth that "Jihad" doesn't mean holy war in the Quran, but rather a spiritual struggle. Not only is this Arabic word (mujahiduna) used in this passage, but it is clearly not referring to anything spiritual, since the physically disabled are given exemption. (The Hadith reveals the context of the passage to be in response to a blind man's protest that he is unable to engage in Jihad, which would not make sense if it meant an internal struggle).

There are two main houses or divisions in the Islamic world view, the “House of Islam” (Dar al-Islam), which include all countries under Islamic authority and second, the “House of War” (Daral-Harb) which include all those countries which have yet to fall to the rule of Islam, considered to be the enemies of Allah.

The Prophet said: “Whoever dies without having fought or having thought of fighting, he dies on one of the branches of hypocrisy.” - Sunan An-Nasa’i 3099, Narrated by Muslim 1910

And when the sacred months have passed, then kill the polytheists wherever you find them and capture them and besiege them and sit in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they should repent, establish prayer, and give zakah, let them [go] on their way. (Qur'an 9:5)

It is often said of the Qur’an that "it's the way you interpret it, or "it can only be understood in the original Arabic", well thankfully we don't need to worry about that since we can understand what verses mean in context by checking the commentaries of the Qu'ran, known as the tafsir. The Word TAFSIR is an arabic word which is derived from the root 'fassara'. Someone who writes tafsir is a 'mufassir....

Ibn Kathir is a famous Mufassir. He is well known and respected for his keen memory and a highly regarded scholar of tafsir (commentary). Born in 1302 AD, he memorized entire Qur’an, word-for-word and memorized a huge number of sayings and teachings (hadeeth) of the prophet Muhammad, along with sayings and commentary about the Quran from Muhammad's companions. The Tafsir of Ibn Kathir is of the most respected and accepted explanations for the Quran and is the most widely used explanations in use today. qtafsir.com Other Mufassirs and tafsir can be found at altafsir.com

(So when the Sacred Months have passed...), meaning, `Upon the end of the four months during which We prohibited you from fighting the idolaters, and which is the grace period We gave them, then fight and kill the idolaters wherever you may find them.' Allah's statement next, (then fight the Mushrikin wherever you find them), means, on the earth in general, except for the Sacred Area. This way, they will have no choice, but to die or embrace Islam. - Tafsir of IBN KATHIR

Then, when the sacred months have passed — that is, [at] the end of the period of deferment — slay the idolaters wherever you find them, be it during a lawful [period] or a sacred [one], and take them, captive, and confine them, to castles and forts, until they have no choice except [being put to] death or [acceptance of] Islam; - Tafsir of al-Jalalayn

Then, when the sacred months have passed) then after the day of immolation when the month of Muharram passes, (slay the idolaters) whose treaty is for fifty days (wherever ye find them) whether in the Sacred Precinct or outside it, during the sacred months or at any other time, (and take them (captive)) imprison them, (and besiege them) in their homes, (and prepare for them each ambush) on every road they tread for trade. (But if they repent) from idolatry and believe in Allah (and establish worship) and acknowledge the five daily prayers (and pay the poor-due) acknowledge the payment of the poor-due, (then leave way free) if they wish to go to the House of Allah. Tafsir of Abd Allah ibn Abbas

“Muhammad’s practice and constant encouragement of bloodshed are unique in the history of religions. Murder, pillage, rape, and more murder in the Quran and in the Traditions ‘seem to have impressed his followers with a profound belief in the value of bloodshed as opening the gates of Paradise’ and prompted countless Muslim governors, caliphs, and viziers to refer to Muhammad’s example to justify their mass killings, looting, and destruction. ‘Kill, kill the unbelievers wherever you find them’ is an injunction both unambiguous and powerful” (Serge Trifovic, Te Sword of the Prophet, p. 51).

O Prophet, urge the believers to war. If there are among you twenty [who are] steadfast, they will overcome two hundred. And if there are among you one hundred [who are] steadfast, they will overcome a thousand of those who have disbelieved because they are a people who do not understand. (Qur'an 8:65)

So do not weaken and call for peace while you are superior; and Allah is with you and will never deprive you of [the reward of] your deeds. (Qur'an 47:35)
“Never argue with an id'iot They will drag you down to their level and beat you with experience.” ― Mark Twain
