Should corporal punishment be allowed in schools?

Debate Information

Though corporal punishment is a thing of the past and in the most countries in the world it is banned, it still remains a controversial topic for many people. And the question: “Should corporal punishment be allowed in our schools or not?” is still remains open. I personally believe that corporal punishment is not an effective practice and it causes more harm than good.

I don’t believe that corporal punishment is effective. It can lead to physical harm for a child. The practice may also be dangerous.

Well, It is practically a form of abuse against children – physically, as well as psychologically. And, by the way, it is proved that children who are beaten and abused are more likely to be prone to depression, sleep disturbances, low self-esteem and suicide.@joecavalry

Corporal punishment is belligerent, ineffective, and technically assault. It may have been an accepted act many years ago, but it proved how inefficient it was. Those who have received corporal punishment (at school or home) will often seek retaliation and become violent themselves. The effects it proceeds on the child varies, which include becoming distrustful of adults and potentially becoming abusive themselves. Corporal punishment merely leads to physical and emotional damage. Once the child is broken, they will never fully heal.

Many studies have shown that corporal punishment has little to no benefits for the teacher to dicipline a student, and in fact will make the student rebel against them. Not to mention the truma, pain and fact the student will likely do the same thing to say their own childern...

This results in an endless cycle and it's actually sad that it's still legal in some places

I dont kno if I have an opinion, but I am generally against violence, so no.

As for discipline, it can and should be taught by applying non-physical methods, as usage of corporal punishment doesn’t have long term effect on students, as a short sharp shock can only affect students' behavior in short-term perspective. There are more effective ways of maintaining discipline than beating. For example, a code of discipline can be a good substitution of corporal punishment which should penalize unacceptable behavior.@Zombieguy1987

Apart from the demage, corporal punishment  creates moral confusion. If you tell a child that violence is wrong then subject them to physical punishment, what should he or she thinks? So if adults beat them then they consider that they can beat each other. That is why we shall show them example by actions not by words.@Oppolzer
