isn't the clean v unclean food thing in the bible a contradiction and/or nonsensical?

Debate Information

so God told his people in the old testament that there are unclean foods. then in the new testament he said there are no unclean foods because God made them clean. as far as i can see, this is a contradiction.
leviticus 11:1 God lists the unclean food. then in Acts 10:15 it says not to call food unclean when God made them clean.

some people say the food was considered unclean because it was unsanitary or something. but how does Jesus dying change that it's unsanitary?

why does Jesus dying suddenly make some food clean when it wasn't before?

As you are probably aware. Life expectancy was low during that era, most people lived to their 40s. The Israelites were the only people to have longer life expectancies, 80 to 120 years.

This is mostly because of the way Israel dealt with excrement. Most nations as in third world countries, relieve themselves on the ground without burying. This would cause issues with flies/bugs carrying disease and future food.
Also, many diseases were carried in the food and the preparation of food. Pigs are known to carry up to 200 diseases and 18 different parasites and worms. As a disease, trichinosis was once quite common—and fatal. Often, however, there are no obvious symptoms—or the symptoms resemble those of other illnesses (such as the flu).
The toxicity levels of rabbits are significantly higher than in other herbivores. Bile salts, fatty acids, gases, and ammonia levels are all at unacceptable levels for human consumption. Many other rodents have similar digestive issues.

When you are a country you can regulate how food is prepared and what is consumed.
Some countries when they find serious side effects of how food is prepared they create laws that prevent such things.

Israel was no different. There were laws in place that prevented issues (like the excrement).
Nevertheless, when Jesus instituted the new law (Law of love) it ended the old law (Mosaic Law).
This law made it easy for Gentiles to serve God without having to change their whole way of life.
God's explanation was made clear in Isaiah after Solomon's study in Ecclesiastes.
Ecclesiastes 8:11 - "Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil."
He said it was hard for a man to adhere to laws when they would not see immediate results.
He said his laws are perfect, but for the sake of man, he would tie the law to the heart, so men would want to adhere to his law.

That is why Jesus (the New King) instituted the new law, allowing more latitude than the previous law.
But the health benefits of adhering to the old law are still there.

The Israelites were the only people to have longer life expectancies, 80 to 120 years...

That would be Israelites living at the time of Leviticus, right? And how do you know that? That's quite a claim imo.....

    Look on page 48
Shows the life expectancy to be between 39 to 54.

Please correct me if I am wrong.
The only people recording longer life spans were two people Asians and Israelites.
If you read their genalogy you would see a record of longevity.
    Asians also:

For the Israelites and Asians, it was because of how they dealt with disease, quarantine, etc.
Also how they dealt with food and preparation.
Diseases were greatly controlled before other nations realized the importance of quarantine.
Also in Asia a tradition of drinking hot wine (sake).

Make sure you drink your wine!

    @Sand

All good data and all that, yes Jews were among the first to realize the importance of sanitation measures, but I was asking if you were referring to Leviticus Israelites when you said 80-120 years life expectancy, not modern ones...
" Adversus absurdum, contumaciter ac ridens! "
  • SandSand 307 Pts   -
    Oh, yes the Leviticus Israelites.
Not the modern ones, there are others who have a longer life expectancy.
    Monaco - 89.4 years Avg.

    @Sand

Sorry, missed the link about the King's genealogy...

So your assertion of life expectancy of 80-120 yrs, at that time, is based on Bible accounts, old testament...

    Ok, got it...

In the Biblical years they didn't know a bacteria from goat ! This is a subject that isn't relative to Biblical times. Let's be real.
  • SandSand 307 Pts   -
Yes, you are correct they did not know the details of bacteria.
Which makes the laws they followed very impressive.

Notice Leviticus 13:45-46 - "As for the leper who has the infection, his clothes shall be torn, and the hair of his head shall be uncovered, and he shall cover his mustache and cry, ‘Unclean! Unclean!’ “He shall remain unclean all the days during which he has the infection; he is unclean. He shall live alone; his dwelling shall be outside the camp."
    Teaching them infection before

Their law stated to isolate people of infection.
This was 4000 years before modern society learned to quarantine.

Look at Leviticus 13:50-52 - "Then the priest shall look at the mark and shall quarantine the article with the mark for seven days. “He shall then look at the mark on the seventh day; if the mark has spread in the garment, whether in the warp or in the woof, or in the leather, whatever the purpose for which the leather is used, the mark is a leprous malignancy, it is unclean. So he shall burn the garment, whether the warp or the woof, in wool or in linen, or any article of leather in which the mark occurs, for it is a leprous malignancy; it shall be burned in the fire."

They were also to quarantine animal skin that had bad marks on it.
This prevented contamination from animals also.
Then told if the mark does not clear up to burn it.

By reading the Laws now, you can clearly see what is being told to them.
They were taught to bury their excrement.
    They were taught to quarantine.
They were taught not to eat certain foods.
They were taught sanitation of washing.
They were taught about not touching dead bodies.
They were taught how to keep water sources clean.

These things may seem small but they are serious killers like tuberculosis, cholera, intestinal diseases, etc.
These diseases wipe out hundreds of thousands, let alone stopping the problem.
The Israelites way of life definitely contributed to there longevity.
