    I would create more than I do now and with different mediums, create my own things rather than other's concepts.  Definitely would give a go at forging and sculpture... I did change career in my early 30s to do something less profitable but more enjoyable for me.

    I would put a lot more time in miniature wargaming too!  :smiley:

    With effort, you could probably do those things without vast amounts of money. I personally don't understand why anybody would want to do "more" stuff if they were suddenly wealthy. I would want to outsource all of my responsibilities and stay inebriated. Maybe I will invest in that alcosynth product that's being discussed in the UK so I won't have to buy a new liver later on down the road. Maybe take some mushrooms and watch the purple sunrise at a beach in Anguila while listening to Laguna sunrise by Black Sabbath. Maybe buy some schools for underprivileged children and have my assistant show up for the cutting of the ribbon. I would learn all the condescending terms that art critics use and go to art showcases and dash all the hopes and dreams of up and coming artists. Chill with Mick Jagger at my house in Nantucket, then kick him out because I'm meeting with the Obamas for lunch. I would be a total douche nozzle. It would be awesome.

    Money is about allocating resources for survival. If we lived in a post scarcity world, where whatever we needed was readily available and more, then money would be no object.

    It would be awesome for some and terrifying for others.

    If you are the kind of person who lives their own life as they want, who values freedom and critical thought, this kind of world would be a utopia. Everyone would be free to do as they pleased.

    Conversely, if you are the type of person who does not truly value freedom, who just wants to be told what to do and do it for some small reward, this type of world is a nightmare. How does one find purpose when none is provided? Not everyone can overcome nihilism.

    At some point in the distant past, the universe went through a phase of cosmic inflation,
    Stars formed, planets coalesced, and on at least one of them life took root.
    Through a long process of evolution this life
    developed into the human race.
    Humans conquered fire, built complex societies and advanced technology .

    All of that so we can argue about nothing.

    *****. I would learn all the condescending terms that art critics use and go to art showcases and dash all the hopes and dreams of up and coming artists.

    As a full time artist that’s  actually painting mainly landscape , cityscapes  and beach themes I think I would be fairly safe from your attacks as I hope your attacks would be aimed at the spate of Art college types who assemble a pile of rubbish on the floor and Call it “Art” .......

    Remember also always use the terms Symbiotic , Organic , Juxtaposition etc , etc

    Have a look at this for “Art” ..... Whatever you think about Cy Twombly’s blackboard scribbles or Banksy’s shredded Girl with Balloon, a new piece at Art Basel Miami Beach has pushed the art market to a fruity new level: Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan duct-taped a banana to a wall and sold it for… $120,000.

    The piece, titled Comedian, consists of exactly four parts: a locally sourced banana, silver duct tape, a surface to attach it to and a certificate of authenticity. Despite that simplicity and its perishable nature, Cattelan’s gallery, Paris-based Galerie Perrotin, apparently had no problem selling it for the six-figure asking price.

    A second edition was sold for the same price, with a third currently on sale for $150,000.

    My problem has always been that I am interested in so many things, yet there is only so many hours in a day. So for the vast majority of my life I jumped from one activity I liked to another, and never quite became a specialist at any of them. I only recently decided to focus my efforts on mastering mathematics and pursuing the tenure track; I find that, at the end of the day, my real intellectual passion comes down to abstract logic, and I always try to reformulate any real life problem in terms of abstract logic and then solve it in a purely logical manner.

    But that is only the primary activity I want to do. I do not believe you can have a complete life by just focusing on one thing; you need to have multiple areas of interest, multiple hobbies and multiple types of activities, to give attention to all aspects of your personality and feel fully satisfied.

    Regarding money specifically, it can be much less of an issue than many think, if you make it a point to just spend less on things you do not really need. As obvious as it sounds, it is a very practical advice. Every time you buy something, ask yourself, "Can I get a similar thing for less?" When you are buying a $4 cup of coffee at Starbucks, think about how much cheaper it would be to just brew your own coffee at home and take it with you - you would reduce your expenses by, at least, 90%.

    A very common response to the question, "What would you do if money was no issue?", is, "I would travel". Yet even quality travel is possible on a very tight budget. I can take a 2-month 15,000 mile road trip around the US and spend less than $1,000 on everything, seeing countless national and state parks, city downtowns and random small towns along the way. In terms of travel quality, it is far better than anything you can buy for money, as you are at all times in the middle of the action, rather than sitting in a luxurious hotel, isolated from everything.

    So, to summarise, I would say that the combination of pursuing your real passion, having a large range of side interests and finding simple ways to spend less money without affecting the quality of your life - allows you to live a happy and fulfilled life life right here, right now. You do not need to wait for retirement, or for becoming a world class specialist in your field, or even for a lifelong partner, to live life to the fullest. You do not need a lot of money, you do not need a lot of skills and you do not need a lot of partners - you just need to understand yourself, your passions, your interests and your abilities, and use them to live a happy life.

    Obviously, all of this assumes that you have met some basic requirements, such as living in the environment you like (if you live in North Korea or Cuba, then you first will need to find a way to get out of there, obviously), having a liveable income (if you work as a cashier at McDonalds, then you need to work on your skills some and start doing something more profitable) and not having severe psychological limitations (if you are afraid of saying "Hi" to a stranger, then your life will be a struggle, and you need to work on that). But all of this is achievable, no matter who you are, although sometimes you have to put in a lot of effort to get the basics down.

    The Banksy piece is probably worth more now, especially because of the very interesting circumstances that surrounded the auction. In all actuality, I probably wouldn't go around being purposely condescending to artists. I was just exaggerating how I would probably become a lazy drug taking drunk if I became horribly rich.

    well. sure, everything would seem basically free; however it would not solve all crimes or social issues. I do not think that lack of money is the reason for the many crimes and other issues humanity face@ZeusAres42

    @maxx

    Well, purely statistically material prosperity strongly anti-correlates with crime rates. Virtually all criminals started out as completely broke and miserable. Few people commit crimes when they are materially well off, and such crimes almost always have to do either with some kind of mental issues, or with getting into a totalitarian ideology.

    That said, I do not think that having all the material desires satisfied would be a great outcome for humanity. We by nature are driven by the desire to improve our lives. If we already have everything, then what is there to aim for? We become lost and confused.
    You see it all the time in celebrities, for example, who seem to have achieved anything they possibly could want: millions followers, dozens millions dollars, etc. - yet they commit suicide out of nowhere. Robin Williams is, probably, the most famous example of that phenomenon: the guy made a career out of making other people laugh, and yet at the end he himself could not practice what he preached and ended his life.

    We always need some goals in life that require a lot of effort to achieve. Without goals, we become broken mentally and do things. Material prosperity is important, but equally important is the need to work hard to obtain it. Having it handed over to you on a silver plate is a recipe for disaster, and will definitely result in a lot of nonsensical actions from people, including committing crimes.
    Have you noticed what most big lottery winners do? They blow everything away almost instantly. Often they get crazy addictions and become far worse off once their wealth is gone, than they were before they acquired it. When you have struggled your whole life, and then suddenly one day you get enough resources to get anything you have ever wanted easily - then your psyche is going to break down, and you are going to do idiotic things.

    This is the secondary reason why I am strongly against any government-issued welfare (the primary reason is that it is just wrong to take people's property away by force). Welfare spoils people and teaches them that they do not need to do much to receive a lot. I had a friend who was on welfare, and in 3+ years she did not even seriously try to look for a job. She had no goals in life and spent her days playing World of Warcraft, reading random stuff on the Internet and watching Netflix. She was miserable and nothing to live for. No idea how she is doing now, but I doubt anything has changed.
    Humans are not made to be taken care of by others. We break down when relying on others becomes our default state and turn into vegetables. Only through personal effort (but reasonable effort, not impossible one that breaks us down in a different way) do we really find fulfilment in life.
  • maxxmaxx 1131 Pts   -
    true,  ;lots of criminals start out broke, but one should not profile criminality; there are lots of high level criminals who steal just for greed or for the fun of it. however, there will alaways be issues with drugs, alchohol , relationships, racisim, murder and so on and I fail to see where any amount of money would lead to a resolution of these problems. it may alleviate robbery for money but that may be about it@MayCaesar

    @piloteer

    Oh, I didn't take the question as "If you were filthy rich" but rather as "If money had no purpose",  like if we had replicator technology as in Star Trek for example... With such technology, money would be no object to everyone, "buying and selling" would have no meaning since you could replicate anything... That's how I took the question... If the question was meant as "what would you do with 100 billion dollars" I probably would have answered differently...

    @Plaffelvohfen

    How would you have answered?
  • maxxmaxx 1131 Pts   -
    and if on the other side of the coin to speak, if I had more money than I could spend; yes I would upgrade my life, "some".  I do not in my life see the need to own so much that I could not use it. Better car, better clothes, better tools and so on.  I would simply upgrade what I have now and as well help my family and friends do the same.  yes I would donate to certain areas also.@ZeusAres42
  • PlaffelvohfenPlaffelvohfen 3985 Pts   -
    @piloteer

    Well, my prior answer would still be true but say I had a gazillion dollars (say, that is 10^1000, something absurdly high), I'd buy Lockheed Martin and/or any other big defense contractor, SpaceX and/or other large satellite manufacturers, then colonize the moon by establishing a permanent base with greenhouses the size of 10 football fields and such, then declare the Moon's independence from Earth and make it a secular utopia where religions would be forbidden and would also finance the largest space colonization program ever... Then I'd start the construction of a Dyson Sphere around the Sun, because why not...
