I don't even like Pete Buttigieg but in his defence he may have not been aware of their history.  I know I wasn't.  According to the article it does seem that they are trying to makeup for their past ignorance.

Salvation Army is an amazing organisation that has helped out millions of people in need worldwide. Several incidents and a couple of questionable statements by individual spokespeople, most of which took place decades ago, hardly makes the organisation "homophobic". In history of any organisation large enough you can find misdoings; this does not mean that all organisations are fundamentally bad in some way.

This is one of the reasons the Democratic Party is doing so poorly. Democrats are so immersed in identity politics, they are now picking on each other over irrelevant things, not realising that they are harming the common cause. 
Buttigieg is not the most stellar candidate, but this is a really low angle of attack against him.

I will also say, as someone who has lived for 5.5 years in the city he is a mayor of, that, while many of his policies are questionable, all-in-all he is a very pragmatic guy. The city is rising up from ashes, and you can see the changes with a naked eye. Even just 2-3 years ago it was a dump, but nowadays it is actually a decent place to live, and, according to the old residents, it starts resembling what it used to be back in the days of its glory, when it was a home to Studebaker.
You guys better support moderates like him or Biden, if you want to have any chance against Trump in 2020.

Tons of LGBT people, myself included, love Chick-fil-A, and they aren't doing half the good the salvation army is doing..
