I do not listen to K-pop, but Korea is one of the countries the culture of which I am familiar with very well.

I can say that the K-pop industry is known for extremely harsh standards combined with the low pay: artists often literally live in a company-owned hostel without being allowed to leave the building, train for 9-10 hours a day including weekends (and the training is no joke; severe traumas are quite common), and for all this get less pay than they could get working a decent office job. Even having tons of fans does not help, as the company intercepts all of the donations and ad revenue.

The reason the companies can get away with it there is that the Korean economy is highly corporate, with the government overseeing most industries, hence competition is strongly restricted. In addition, K-pop groups cannot go independent due to the intellectual property laws demanding that any such group is affiliated with one of the major K-pop sponsor companies. Finally, those few who do manage to go independent legally have to leave Korea and do it somewhere else (usually in the US or Japan), as in Korea they are systematically harassed by the oligopolist companies and get regular lawsuits and negative publicity.

Here is a good interview of a K-pop trainee you might want to check out:
