Best Computer system? Linux, Windows, Mac/Apple, BSD or other?

Yeah, I know this is kind of personal preference but anyway the best for me has got to be Linux. The only reason why I've not said BSD is because at a glimpse that appears to be a system for the most advanced in computer technology which is something I'm currently not. I like Linux because of it's speed, security and customizability. What about you?

  • I am a sucker for Apple/Mac. Dell is also really good. I have Windows, Mac, Linux and BSD. Leaving Mac i'd probably say Linux. Its security and speed is very good.

Apple is good but it's limited.

    Limited in the sense?

  • Okay, this is a tough question to answer. I use all three. My daily driver is a Mac with dual-boot into Windows set up, in case I need it. I have a fairly inexpensive AMD-based Linux box for inserting unknown USBs or downloading from untrustworthy sources, which I can then transfer to my main computer if I need to. If any viruses do end up on my Linux box, I just install a fresh copy of Ubuntu (which is the Linux distro I use). All of them have their strengths. MacOS of course has legendary ease of use, but I do think Ubuntu comes close. Windows is pretty much universal and has quite a lot of customisability, but nowhere near that of Linux. Ubuntu is great for most things, with the one disadvantage that most applications don't run on it. I would say Mac, but whenever I run MacOS I am using Apple hardware, which is quite powerful. So excluding Mac I'd say Linux is best.

In the sense of customizability for a start. Secondly, can become expensive as you have to always often buy new hardware to keep up with the latest version. Third, it lack compatibility.

Just a note about Ubuntu. First there are many different distros now. Ubuntu was the first one I tried. Fedora and Manjaro is pretty good now for beginners. Anyway, as for Ubuntu a privacy issue was discovered as of from the version 12.10 and there after, among the privacy conscious. https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2012/10/privacy-ubuntu-1210-amazon-ads-and-data-leaks.
