Why Did God Save Noah?

Doesn't it seem rather incongruous that God saved Noah, his family, and living specimens of every animal?
After all, Noah had a history of alcoholism and adultery and animals freely participated in the food chain by preying on each other, committing cannibalism, homosexual behavior and torturing host creatures alive in the most heinous ways.
Surely, God would have learned from the mistakes of his creatures by designing and making new versions. And it wasn't that it would have been an imposition since all he needed was a handful of clay and a day to complete the task.
