Why Japan Has Too Many Names?

Nowadays, I am working on a project which includes the history of Japan, and it came into my knowledge that Japan has too many names. Japanese people recognize it with the terms 'Nihon' or 'Nippon' and not familiar enough with its English name Japan. Yes, I also found this source which refers that Japan is only known as Japan in English. According to many lingual experts, due to language difficulties, foreigners pronounced it differently according to their accents.
On the contrary, there is also another point which claims that Southern Chinese people were used to call this land "Zu-pang". That's why when Marco Polo visited South China, he introduced the Western world with the name of Zipangu to this place. Luckily, the meaning of all of these words is the same. Yes, few words refer it the land of the rising sun or some describe it as the sun's origin. But do you think why the Japanese didn't present their name in front of the world correctly? Is it a language gap?
