A Brain Computer Interface is a device which connects the brain with a device such as a computer. This exciting emerging field of study will soon be used to aid disabled patients in all sorts of ways, from helping the paralyzed walk to letting people speak using only their thoughts.
One day, these devices might be as ubiquitous as smart phones are today, and will usher in a new era of human-machine interactions.
However, one philosophical question remains: If these devices can detect specific thoughts, then does that mean that thoughts are entirely material?
I would argue that the answer is yes. To put it bluntly, if thought was some abstract non-material process, then these devices should not be able to detect it any more than a device can detect freedom, courage, or integrity for example. Since they can, and they only detect material signals, then it stands to reason that thought must be material in order for these devices to detect it.
At some point in the distant past, the universe went through a phase of cosmic inflation,
Stars formed, planets coalesced, and on at least one of them life took root.
Through a long process of evolution this life developed into the human race.
Humans conquered fire, built complex societies and advanced technology .
All of that so we can argue about nothing.
