Ancient Soldiers, how come you never realized a ranged weapon is better?

Debate Information

Modern soldiers use guns.

Ancient soldiers use melee weapons.

I do know that Ancient soldiers have used bows/crossbows, but they never used them a lot of the time, many major ancient battles have always eventually boiled down to a melee.

Similar to how modern soldiers basically rely on guns (with good reason), how come ancient soldiers never got the same idea (in using bows)?

Melee fights are many times more brutal than a bow fight.

Bows are essentially better than melee.

I say, they were . Or maybe that melees were simply easier to use and bows needed more training. But, crossbows could be used with more ease with less training.
It would've paid off.
