How Does One Cheat at Debating?

Debate Information

Let's face the facts. If you are down and out, on a losing side and have absolutely no ammunition at your disposal, what are you going to resort to in desperation to maintain your ill-fated position?
Get as low-down and as dirty as it takes of course.

Let's take a typical argument. And for argument's sake, let's take an argument about religion since, after all this is a forum on religion, right? For example, you just happen to be unfortunate enough to be a die-hard religious fanatic who will do anything to "keep the dream alive" when the obvious proposition comes your way; "prove God exists". Well, Of course, you could just act absurd and childish and try to avoid the issue by saying; "that wasn't a question" or "you prove God doesn't exist".

But that is hardly going to keep the howling dogs of reality at bay, is it? Let's try some really dirty tactics instead.

* The good old ad hominem attack. Turn the argument into one of questioning the credibility and sanity of the topic author in the hope of putting him off the scent.

* The reversal. Just twist the whole thing around by trying to accuse the author of having a belief and being deluded.

* Another golden oldie is ad populum fallacy. Hey, he might just be dumb enough to fall for the idea that if lots of people are wrong it makes it right, therefore God exists.

* Ill temper. That is always the ultimate dirty tactic when you are losing and as we all know, religious folk are well known for having short fuses.

* Lie. After all, as a religious follower, you have been taught a load of lies so lying will simply come naturally to you. And hey, if you think about it, lying about a lie then makes it the truth, don't you reckon?

* What's the world's longest river? Denial, of course, is another delaying tactic when you have been totally cornered by a sharp-minded atheist. "I did not say Jesus is alive". (I said Jesus lives). You know, just play on semantics and metaphors and you can string this one out forever.

* When all else fails, use the "ostrich" tactic. Just bury your head in the sand by not responding and hope that the whole nasty poke of reality will simply disappear.

So, there you go. When your precariously flimsy raison d'etre is threatened by those nasty, logical realists just get down and dirty and do what you know you are best at. just lie, cheat and be immoral.
