Let's face it. We have all had supernatural beliefs throughout our lifetimes. It's only; err, natural.
It all starts with Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, and the Tooth Fairy and, of course, as we grow in thought and wisdom we realize the folly of such myths and why our parents led us to believe such fibs. It was all to do with discipline in the hope we would learn how to be good. "Only good boys and girls get gifts from Santa, so, go upstairs and tidy your room."
And did we ever say: "Mum, That's all a load of nonsense. There's no such thing as Santa and you are just using that crap to manipulate us into doing things. "?
No, siree, we would just let it slide since we knew what was at stake, apart from getting a quick clip around the ears; the difference between getting the latest game station or X-plode skateboard for Xmas and getting some lousy educational book about the animal kingdom. You didn't want to lose face in front of your mates. And so we grow up to be perfectly normal folk and all the Santa charade is behind us.
It's a bit like religion really. Kids are brought up to believe a load of myths about God in order to keep them in line. "Say your prayers and be good and you will go to heaven". Apart from a bit of guilt trip being introduced here, it's all pretty inoffensive really
But you know, there are some people who don't grow out of it. Whether through family or societal pressure, they dare not shed their weird brand of supernatural belief. Perhaps they dare not leave their comfort zone and cling onto their security blanket for dear life. Or, perhaps they are just simply very naive and gullible by nature and need some sort of conduit to channel their weaknesses as a way of "belonging".
Let's make no bones about it, however. What these people belong to is an institution that has an abysmal record of cruelty, abuse, morbid fear-mongering, bigotry and hatred of others. Institutional religion is dangerous, unhealthy and has no place whatsoever in decent, modern, civilized society.
