Dear Swolliw, I am new here and I guess you could call me "religious curious" and I keep wondering what people mean by "being saved".
Looking through your posts and really informative and interesting topics I can see that you don't have a bias like others in this forum and that you always thoroughly research your balanced information without holding back on anything, especially the truth. So please tell me, before I decide to become serious about religion, what does "being saved" mean?
Very good question there Jennaisse, and I'll do my best to answer your question fairly, honestly and to the point.
To be quite blunt, when (usually Christians) religious people use this term, it means being exempt from being subjected to endless torture, humiliation and abuse inside a giant burning furnace. To get such an exemption, you must say that you believe in God then everything is hunky dory. It sounds very frightening and intimidating and indeed it is. If we look back to ancient history in primitive and barbaric times, it was common for authorities to threaten common people with such morbid fear if they did not do as they were told and follow the laws of God, which of course involved paying a high percentage of their meagre wages to those in control.
Nowadays, in modern, civilised society we don't have governments that do that sort of thing, and everyone has access to quality information to know better than to believe archaic rubbish such as Heaven and Hell. So, if someone tells such an unspeakable threat to you, they are scare-mongering to get your attention. It goes without saying that if any grown adult actually believes in such nonsense, he or she is deluded. Again, nowadays there are many professional people and social groups (not including Churches) who can properly help such victims.
I sincerely trust that this helps you Jennaisse and feel free to let me know how things are going.
