Not only was it a bad decision for the taxpayers of the US, it could also be considered a decision that has only exacerbated a continuous stream of warfare in the region that has spanned several generations.
In 1979, the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan and tried to claim the country as their own. President Jimmy Carter ordered US military training teams to Afghanistan to aid the Afghan people against the Soviet invasion. For the next 10 years, a US presence remained in Afghanistan to aid the Mujahideen in their defense against the Soviets. In 1989, the Soviet forces withdrew from Afghanistan leaving the country of Afghanistan a sovereign and free nation. The Soviet Union disbanded in 1991.
I am proposing that the military aid the US had provided to the people of Afghanistan was an egregious foreign policy that had disastrous consequences for ALL three countries involved in the conflict. I am NOT proposing that if the US had done nothing to aid the Afghan people, then the consequences would have been better for ALL of the three countries involved in the conflict. I am proposing that the outcome for the US would have been far less costly for American taxpayers who have paid for warfare in Afghanistan for the majority of the last 42 years, and the soldiers who fought and died would not have if the US had not gone to the aid of Afghanistan. I am also proposing that it is certainly conceivable that much of that endless warfare in Afghanistan would not have taken place if the US had not ever gone to the aid of the Afghanistan people. I am also proposing that it is also a possibility the Soviet Union would not have collapsed, or at least not have collapsed as rapidly.
