We all
(should) know what quackery is:
Quackery, often synonymous with health fraud, is the promotion of fraudulent or ignorant medical practices. A quack is a "fraudulent or ignorant pretender to medical skill" or "a person who pretends, professionally or publicly, to have skill, knowledge, qualification or credentials they do not possess; a charlatan or snake oil salesman". (Wikipedia)
And we all
(should) know that quacks include:
Chiropractors
Naturopaths
Hypnotists
Acupuncturists
Clairvoyants
Astrologers
Numerologists
Magnetic Healers
Reflexologists
Homeopaths
Psychics
Iridologists
Ear Candling Therapists
Aromatherapists
Shamans
And these are just to name a few since new
"natural therapies" seem to be popping up with regular monotony, e.g.,
"Apitherapy"....many people have been stung by that scam. Then, there are the unscrupulous con-artists who actually invent
(non-existent) diseases such as
"Lyme Disease". Of course every charlatan wearing white shoes and gold chains is going to jump on the latest COVID-19 quackery bandwagon with miracle cures such as
"Intravenous bleaching".
More than a hundred years ago when scientific research was taking off, so did the snake oil salesmen crawl out of the woodwork in the form of travelling medicine shows, lulling gullible people into believing that their methamphetamine or heroin infused elixirs would cure just about anything. It all got more than a bit out of hand so the legislators clamped down, even on the corporates such as Coca Cola who was forced to replace the cocaine in their "medicinal" drink
(hence the name) with caffeine. The swansong for natural, alternative therapies came when the originator of Chiropractic was jailed over his fraudulent practices.
Nowadays of course, with everything
"Green" becoming trendy, the fraudsters are out in force resurrecting these dubious and unproven practices. They will invariably use every devious trick to circumvent the law. For example, in Australia, many local authorities refuse to grant zoning approval for any quack setting up business. So, a chiropractor or deep needle therapist, for example, will either practice under cover as a legitimate physiotherapist (or be "employed" by one) in order to carry out their dastardly business.
And these individuals are doing harm, emptying the pockets of their hapless (if gullible) victims as well as injuring them
(organ failure from being given toxic amounts of "herbal" infusions or strokes, paralysis and death from chiropractic). Not to mention of course that victims are lulled into a false sense of
"betterness" when in fact, their medical condition is worsening.....as in the case of Steve Jobs who may still be alive today if he hadn't veered off on some ridiculous holistic tangent of
"natural medicine"....he really did bite the apple on that one.
So, what should we do to stem the practices of these worthless, dishonest, parasitic leeches of society?
What laws can we introduce to get rid of these menaces who have a penchant for preying on those who are naive, gullible and impressionable?
