Do direct stimulus checks actually help people and help the economy?

Debate Information

A lot of people say that giving money to poor people makes them lazy, and less likely to get out of poverty.

"The number of Americans living in poverty declined overall during the Covid pandemic due to the massive stimulus relief measures Congress enacted at the beginning of the crisis, the Census Bureau reported Tuesday. The official poverty rate rose slightly in 2020 to 11.4 percent, up from a record low 10.5 percent in 2019, the U.S. Census reported, but that figure mostly reflects cash payments to Americans. After accounting for all the government aid payments, the Census' supplemental poverty measure showed a decline from 11.8 percent in 2019 to 9.1 percent in 2020."

If a person is starving, has children who are starving, and are kicked out of their homes, how will they purchase goods? When people purchase goods from the money that they get from a stimulus check, they spend it. That helps the economy. In fact, it helps big business, because some of the products, like food and medicines come from big business.

Not giving these people money means that they don't have that money to spend, which does not help the economy. These people might have to ask for even more welfare checks, or die and have their children die.

Some people prefer to let these people suffer instead of trying to help them out.
We all live together, if i help someone, it can really help me back.

It's not helpful to help the already wealthy. They don't need the help. When the rich get tax breaks, they just get richer. There is no evidence that they actually use their greater wealth to help the needy, create new jobs or indeed, help the economy. We know that the rich don't pay their fair share of taxes. Donald Trump paid just $750 (£580) in federal income tax both in 2016. That's not exactly helping the needy or increasing the wealth of his nation. It just means he got away with not helping out.
