Can Anything Be Possible?

Debate Information

If I were to say that pink elephants with green wings exist, one would naturally reply with "that's absurd, there's no such thing". To which I could reply, "You prove that they don't exist". The logic (albeit somewhat bent) here of course, is that if something cannot be disproven then there must be the possibility of its existence.
A prime example of exposing the absurdity of such logic is the "Flying Spaghetti Monster". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flying_Spaghetti_Monster
Indeed, and much to the chagrin of die-hard theists, there has actually been a church registered called "Church of the Flying Spaghetti Monster" and followers call themselves "Pastafarians".

Obviously, the whole thing sounds like being tongue-in-cheek and flippant but, after all, aren't the Pastafarians trying to say something about the idea that "anything is possible"?

    From the Gemini chatbot:

Whether anything is possible depends on how you define "possible." Here are two ways to look at it:

    1. Scientifically: Within the laws of physics and our current understanding of the universe, many things are demonstrably impossible. You can't travel faster than light, for example, or violate the laws of thermodynamics.

    2. Philosophically: Some argue that with enough time and random chance, even the seemingly impossible might eventually occur. In an infinite universe, for instance, the theory goes that anything that can happen will eventually happen, including highly improbable events.

    Here's a breakdown:

    • Absolutely Impossible: Things that defy the fundamental laws of physics, like teleporting or traveling back in time, seem out of reach.
    • Highly Improbable: Certain events might be technically possible but so unlikely they effectively become impossible. Winning the lottery ten times in a row might fall into this category.
    • Potentially Possible: With advancements in science and technology, what seems impossible today might become achievable tomorrow. Think about flying to the moon, a feat once considered unimaginable.

Ultimately, the question of possibility hinges on a blend of scientific understanding, technological progress, and perhaps even a dash of philosophical fancy.
