We all (should) hear about the many religions and denominations there are and how some are mainstream while others are extreme. For example, many Christians view Jehovah's Witnesses as being extreme. However, we are judging religion in this case by comparing one religion (or denomination) with the others.
How do different faiths stack up (when talking of extremes) with societal standards?
Let's look at what most people would call a "mainstream" faith, let's say, ooooh Catholicism for example (probably the largest) and compare it with mainstream, civilised society standards.
Would we call the vilification of minority groups as being extreme?
Would we call the deliberate and methodical covering-up of physical, sexual and psychological abuse as being extreme?
Would we call the full support (including financially) of the Nazi Party as being extreme?
Would we call out-of-date moral standards and sexism as being extreme?
Would we call a net worth in assets of over thirty billion dollars as being extreme?
This is just one example but given that the Catholic Church is widespread we could also add other denominations such as Anglican, Presbyterian etc. into the same mould and debate, are these institutions extreme by societal standards?
