Why are you no longer a Theist?

Debate Information

What I like about the above song is that the way I like to view is that this could be for some former theists a state of transcendence from a religion into the secular world. It could be said that this is the first stage of this transformation I.E that is despair, denial, anger, and depression kicks in and ultimately the gift of Doubt!

I myself used to kind of believe in God when I was a child. I say kind of as I didn't really take religion that seriously. To put into perspective if someone was to ask me to put it on a scale of 1 to 10 I would say I was a five in my belief in God when I was a child despite the fact of having to mandatory learn religion at school. Others might have just viewed me as a "none." I also don't think my family environment is, nor have been entirely serious about religion either. Some of the last generations were serious though and I somewhat assume that the generations before them would have taken religion more seriously and so forth. In fact, I would say that pretty much all my current living relatives are not really religious anymore even if they may not admit it.

Moreover, it was during my teenage years where circumstances happened and I started to read a load of books. As a result, I very, fortunately, came across other epistemologies I had not previously been exposed to. Or perhaps I hadn't taken it very seriously before up until this point in my life haha. ;) Anyway, I finally came to the conclusion that religion and faith are unreliable as well detrimental epistemologies. In religion God is defined as having anthropic attributes; in other words, this is just a superhuman that we cannot see. The Bible and other religious scriptures don't just contradict each other but they are also filled with contradictories within themselves not to mention hypocrisy. The religious scriptures were also written down thousands of years ago with no reliable way to attest to.

On another but also relative note in The God Delusion Richard Dawkins says that he is a 6 on how he rates his belief that God doesn't exist on a scale of 1 to 10. I admit that I am a bit surprised by this statement. To gauge something on a scale implies there is probability and not some kind of feeling that it might be possible. I myself think a better question would be on a scale of 0 to 10 how do you rate your belief that God does exist? I would answer this with 0. There is no probability scale here; just a possibility or a feeling it's possible.

Anyway, now over to you. :)
