on the origins of the hand-shake?

Of course, no one knows. some claim that shaking hands showed you had no weapon in it, yet i consider that unlikely. a weapon can be held in either hand. My idea is that it was a social construct among causal friends. a tyoe of hand hug so to speak when an actual hug was reserved for closer people. So what is your idea(s) upon it? any theories?
