Phil Collins is widely considered one of the greatest drummers of all time. He was immensely innovative. Keith Moon or John Bonham would not have been able to do what Phil Collins did. The only reason Phil Collins became the singer of genesis was because Peter Gabriel left the band and they were going to break up because of that, but Peter Gabriel put immense pressure on Phil Collins to fill his spot so the band wouldn't break up.

I do agree with you there. It is a sign of a top drummer to have his own distinctive, "appealing" sound. Collins, Moon, and Baker all had that rare "bouncy" quality about their style whereas Bonham was in a league all of his own. Nobody but nobody has been able to emulate his spectacular (almost to the point of distraction) thumping beat which was always technically spot on and never needed any balancing out after recordings...he was that brilliant. Collins himself paid homage to Bonham stating "I would give my right arm to be able to play like that".
