In 1995, young actor Leonardo di Caprio starred in a high school movie (Basketball Diaries) where he played the role of a troubled teen who walks into class in a long black coat and started shooting his teacher and classmates with a shotgun. Since then, we have had a series of situations where school pupils have gone into class in long black coats and guns, and they have shot their teachers and class mates. Is there a connection? Similarly, violent crime rates are rising throughout the western world despite either the presence or absence of firearms within countries. Poverty can not be the problem as prosperity has never been higher. Aging populations should also indicate a downward trend. So too, the presence of high resolution security cameras everywhere and advanced police detection methods should also indicate a downward trend. Leaving aside the undeniable fact that the presence of dysfunctional and crime prone minorities are increasing within western societies, there must be an explanation? I propose that what is changing is western culture. The Hollywood inspired culture of the west is now openly glamourising violence and serious criminal behaviour to the extent that being a dangerous criminal is now seen as a status elevating career choice for low intelligence and low status young males. What is worse, is that Hollywood insists on churning out ever more 'revenge movies" where usually a low status male goes on a revenge killing spree to get even with his tormentors and is portrayed as a Real Man for doing so.
