How Much of a Charlatan Was Christ?

Most historians concur that there was indeed such a character as Jesus Christ living around the areas and times as portrayed in the Bible. The Bible of course puts quite a shine on said doer of all good for mankind but what was he really like?
The Monty Python movie, "The Meaning of Life" portrayed Jesus as being a rather clumsy simpleton who became the scapegoat victim of an over-zealous religious cult much to the chagrin of Christian clerics when the movie was released. But, what was Christ really like? Can we remove the gloss and spin that ardent Christian followers so love to put on the whole story and objectively suppose who Christ really was?
Given that Christ was obviously very charismatic to maintain a large group of followers who hung onto his every word I think it is hard to dispel the idea that Christ was no different to his contemporaries such as Jim Jones and David Koresh. Consider the same scenarios; all three were hated by authorities and society in general were very suspicious of them, each claimed to be the son of God and each of them led their followers to gruesome deaths. Of course, Jones's and Koresh's efforts on that score were nowhere near the scale and brutality of Christ's efforts but don't we see the same sort of patterns here?
