Shouldn't We Embrace Capital Punishment?

Debate Information

Let's face it, death is a natural thing, we all die and we are all capable of killing ourselves and each other.

Why be squeamish about the death penalty, after all it is the ultimate punishment. To simply say "killing is wrong" is hardly a valid nor a reasoned argument against the act of punishing someone for the most horrific and brutal crimes that could ever be committed.

So, why should we have a death penalty? We could argue that the threat of a death sentence may deter some criminals from committing the ultimate crime but that is a small consideration compared with the overwhelming reason supporting the death penalty; that being of a bargaining tool. Criminal psychologists and profilers have found that the common traits of murderers are that of narcissism and a craving for power and dominance over other(s). One of the most common problems for law enforcement is the unwillingness of murderers to confess and reveal the location of their victim(s). This is a harrowing experience for victims' relatives and witnesses who have to endure endless months of court proceedings to get a conviction against a killer who pleads guilty and a lifetime sentence for these people when a murder refuses to also reveal where the body is located. Police know that plea bargaining works; many murderers have confessed and/or revealed the whereabouts of victims' bodies when they know that their life will be spared. In practice in the USA for example, in 2019 the Federal Bureau of Prisons and 29 states held 2,570 prisoners under sentence of death, and executed only 22 (0.9%) of them.

Is this a compelling case then to keep the death penalty?
