Interesting article, how executive and middle level managers are hoarding top talent to discourage their top performers from moving to advancement opportunities within the company.  The article talks about techniques what some are doing about it to enable their top talent career mobility.

Once you hire them though, retention is key, and it's important to maximize their value by giving them internal mobility opportunities (before they jump ship)

It is better for top performers to move on to a different role in the same company than to go to a competitor because they lack opportunities for advancement

On the question of being able to retain an outstanding member of staff I would assert that if the proprietors of a corporation cannot recognise that on occasions there will be exceptional individuals whose performance justifies them receiving a higher wages than themselves then they shouldn't be in business.

Top talent should be given opportunities within the company, including promotions and higher wages.
if middle management levels are hoarding these folks selfishly, that is a big opportunity for improvement.
    WhyTrump - a good question
