Evidences for God

Debate Information

I think it's obvious God, as depicted in the Bible, exists. Here's the evidence.

1) In the beginning, God created the heavens and Earth. If it wasn't for God, we couldn't be here. The Earth is just in the right spot so it's not so cold we freeze, or so hot we burn.
2) And only God could've made everything in the first place. Something can't come from nothing. Scientists agree the universe had an origin, so what? Did the universe create itself, when it didn't even exist to do so? No, God created the universe, making sure everything's fine tuned so we could prosper.
3) God is the maximally greatest being (MGB). It's possible he exists in some possible world, therefore he does exist in some possible world. Since he exists in some possible worlds, and he's a MGB, he therefore must exist in all possible worlds, therefore our world.

There's more out there, but I'll stick with these three. Good luck refuting them, Athiests! I'll be ready. [There's a generous 24 hours per round, and 7 voting days like Genesis.]

He said specifically that God as depicted in the Bible, not the Christian God.

Scientific method: noun; a method of procedure that has characterized natural science since the 17th century, consisting in systematic observation, measurement, and experiment, and the formulation, testing, and modification of hypotheses.

    1) This is a false assumption of bijection: "If A => B, then B => A". We being here does not exclude the possibility of God's existence, but it does not necessitate it.

In addition, it is not the Earth that is just in the right spot; it is we who evolved in Earthen conditions to best adapt to them. The home planet of a species will always be in just the right spot; if the spot is different, then the species evolve differently, so that the spot is right as a result of evolutionary chain.
Earth's conditions have changed drastically throughout the history of Earth, and with them the dominant species changed as well. The current conditions are perfect for us; conditions 100 million years later will be different and perfect for a different species.

    2) This is simply misunderstanding of what science claims. "Something" and "nothing" are abstract logical categories. Everything is something, and even nothing is something. Science does not claim that the Universe came from nothing; instead, it claims that the Universe appearance cannot be discerned from the barrier of singularity at the moment of Big Bang.

Besides, whether scientific claims are true or not, existence of the Universe does not mean it was created. Again, false assumption of bijection. Existence of the Universe does not exclude the possibility that it was created by the God, but it does not necessitate it.

    3) "Maximally greatest being" has to be defined properly. "Greatest" in what regard? Size? Then, by your definition, the Universe can be the God. This is just a definition of the word, this does not claim the existence of any specific being.

    ---

Frankly, these are shaky points, full of logical holes and based on semantic exercises, rather than tangible concepts. At best you demonstrated that the world "could" have been created by the God, but you provided no evidence of that actually having taken place, and you have not provided any arguments demonstrating alternatives wrong.

To link what I'm describing to the Christian God, just look at Genesis's account. In the beginning, God made Heaven and Earth. He placed the sun, he placed the moon.

The sun's the perfect distance as to not burn the Earth or at least evaporate all existing water, and not too far. Also, consider how our bodies are constructed. Humans are incredibly complex, consisting of billions of cells, functioning to digest food, defend from disease, and don't forget our brain. It processes information and comes up with ideas no other animal is capable of. You really think all this happened with chance? And if Earth was just launched off as some kind of debris, would you expect it to be in the habitable zone, the perfect spot?

    Response to MayCaesar:

"it is not the Earth that is just in the right spot; it is we who evolved in Earthen conditions to best adapt to them."
And they happened to get the proper traits? If evolution is true, then we're basically drawing the lottery of what animals or plants become able to reproduce. Instead, God made them already able to survive in the desert, plains, or arctic. He placed fish in the seas, livestock in the plains, and birds to roam the sky. This is a much better solution than just rolling the lottery.

""Something" and "nothing" are abstract logical categories. Everything is something, and even nothing is something."
As a concept, yes 'nothing' exists. But if we're referring to a realm of nothing, an empty void, then nothing exists in that realm.

"Science does not claim that the Universe came from nothing; instead, it claims that the Universe appearance cannot be discerned from the barrier of singularity at the moment of Big Bang."
So do you suggest the universe came from a random small dot that just happened to exist and expand? Even the best scientists admit they don't have an answer. The theory's incomplete. We can safely assume it must've been God, as per Genesis's account.

""Maximally greatest being" has to be defined properly. "Greatest" in what regard? Size?"
Should've been clearer, sorry. A MGB the the greatest possible being, which no other can exceed. You could say size is a factor, but the more important features are power, knowledge, and necessity. Since God is the MGB, being all powerful and all knowing as well, he has to exist in all possible worlds, as it's not impossible for him to exist in some world. The Universe can't be a MGB, since it doesn't exactly have power or knowledge.

We have yet to see any proof that the god in question is that which the Bible describes and asserts is both morally and physically ruling over our reality.
