    it was not just the religious authority that believed so but even before organized religion came about, people believed it; they were on what felt like to them a stationary earth and to them it appeared that the heavenly bodies, including the sun were the objects that moved. I do believe tht the astronomer galileo was even convicted of heresy by the church leaders as he tried to convince them that they were wrong.@Dr_Maybe

    Why did the religious authorities feel they needed to incorporate the solar system into their religion?

    @Dr_Maybe

    Do you have a specific religion in mind when asking this question? Different religions might have different reasons to incorporate celestial elements in their cosmology...

    You say ......Why did the religious authorities feel they needed to incorporate the solar system into their religion

    My reply .....Regarding Christianity and their beliefs , religious  authorities are those who claim to know the working of their gods mind so it would be perfectly reasonable that they would hold opinions on such matters

    It is pretty hard to make accurate judgments of what the world is like with no observable evidence. It was virtually impossible to figure out that our planet is nothing special until, at least, telescopes became widely used; for all we knew at the time, our planet and the sky with weird things on it was all there is to the Universe.

    I do not think it has anything to do with religion, but instead it is just how the natural process of learning about the world has gone.

    Now, why monotheistic religions still kept preaching this world view, long after we realised that it was wrong - that is a different question. It has more to do with how power structures operate and what incentives they have to tell the truth versus propaganda, than with the aspects of religion itself. Although, one could argue, the two are intertwined.

    >>Why did the religious authority's at the time believe that this was true?

    “Beware lest any man spoil you through philosophy and vain deceit, after the tradition of men, after the rudiments of the world, and not after Christ” (Colossians 2:8).

    The so called religious "authorities" most likely did not believe the garbage that they were spoon feeding their credulous votaries. Since they assumed "authority" over things that pertained to God, people would look to them naively for answers regarding things, such as what they saw in the sky. Not to show how ignorant that they really were, they made stuff or repeated known fables up that seemed credible at the time, things they thought could not be verified, so as to maintain their dominance.

    I know that after my departure fierce wolves will come in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves will arise men speaking twisted things, to draw away the disciples after them. (Acts 20:29-30)

    The only true religious authority is God's Word. There were a group of religious leaders called the Nicolaitanes that brought impurity into the assembly (church), mostly likely the first seeds of clericalism within Christendom. "Nico" means to rule and "laitan" as used in the word laity, means the people. The "deeds" and the "doctrines" of the Nicolaitanes are that which God hates (Rev. 2:6,15). Doing and teaching things that are not in God's Word, which is specifically forbidden.

    I have applied all these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, brothers, that you may learn by us not to go beyond what is written, that none of you may be puffed up in favor of one against another. (1 Corinthians 4:6)

    And we also thank God constantly for this, that when you received the word of God, which you heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word of God, which is at work in you believers. (1 Thessalonians 2:13)

    Priest or other titles that assume authority over believers are not found in the Bible. Papacy is just not there. What the Bible does teach is the Priesthood of all believers, not a special class of people called clergy who rule over another class called laity.

    Speaking of all believers .. "you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ." (1 Peter 2:5) also see Rev. 1:6, 5:10.

    The reason they put the sun in the center (you dummies) is because god created the entire universe just for man. We were so impressed with ourselves that the only reasonable conclusion was that we were smack dab in the center. This view was observed well past the time that more intelligent people had figured out that's wrong. If you still want to think that god has put you at the center of everything you will be disappointed yet again because the universe does not have a center.

    @Dr_Maybe

    There are two ways to look at it: the Universe does not have a center, and every point of the Universe is its center. From the anthropocentric perspective, the idea that we are at the center is perfectly reasonable and consistent with the observations - however, this idea is problematic as far as formal theory goes, as a proper formal theory does not depend on the reference point and should work regardless of whether we apply it to ourselves, or to a point billions light years away.

    For the idea that the god put us in the center of the Universe to work, we have to put strict constraints on what that god is like, ones that are strongly inconsistent with any of the modern monotheistic religions. The god would have to be something like the Architect from the Matrix for it to work.

    Yes, the depths of our self importance is only limited by our imagination!
