What are the philosophical implications of infinity?

Debate Information

Throughout Human history, it seems that there is a reoccurring theme which starts with our solipsistic arrogance, where we assume that we are at the center and the purpose of it all, only to discover that we are indeed, only a tiny fraction of a much grander and much larger reality.

The geocentric model of the cosmos was replaced with the heliocentric one, only to be latter replaced with a galactic one, shortly thereafter being replaced by our current multi galactic understanding which has no "center", and now there is growing evidence that there was a universe prior to this one as is evidenced by gravitational anomalies in the cosmic microwave background and as predicted by inflationary theory. This is all possible and evidenced without mentioning the possibility of a single infinite universe or the highly speculative possibility of a multi-verse, as defined by the many worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics or other theories such as cyclic cosmology.

https://arxiv.org/abs/1808.01740

All of this seems to suggest, that humans are not special, and that any reality that can exist does exist, and because it is self-evident that humans are possible we must therefore exist.

I want to take that above possibility as an assumption, if you don't think this is true that is fine, I'm not forcing you to, but for the sake of debate this should be an assumption that this is true.

What are the philosophical implications of an ultimate infinite reality that is like this, where whatever is possible does exist somewhere?
At some point in the distant past, the universe went through a phase of cosmic inflation,
Stars formed, planets coalesced, and on at least one of them life took root.
Through a long process of evolution this life
developed into the human race.
Humans conquered fire, built complex societies and advanced technology .

All of that so we can argue about nothing.

    Interesting topic!

Philosophically, I think infinity (whether it's an eternal cycle of a single recurring universe, or an infinity of universes in a multiverse) only gives more weight to existentialism, nihilism and absurdism, which are really just 3 different reactions to the same fact (the complete lack of intrinsic meaning and purpose to Existence). Religion is a 4th way of dealing with this, it just denies the problem...

Considering that, given an infinite amount of time, every possible occurrence will inevitably happen, however improbable, a googolplex of years has no more meaning than a nanosecond in an infinity of time... Wouldn't it make some sense to conclude that only the reality of an actual infinity could allow for the possibility of Existence (that any reality that can exist in fact did, does or will exist)?

infinity; something existing forever; is not much different that believing in a creator existing forever.

@Plaffelvohfen Yeah, an infinite set of realities or an infinite reality with varying characteristics will always produce everything that is possible. The only thing that it will not produce is nothing.

This implies that whatever conclusions we or anyone reaches about this subject will inevitably be reached somewhere.

Regarding the linked paper, I do not like the kind of claims made in its abstract. The evidence is far too inconclusive to suggest the origin of those signals, and the multiverse theories we have are far too vague at this stage to be experimentally verifiable. Penrose is known for typically overreaching with his hypotheses, and surprisingly often he does turn out to be right - but even so, one should not put a cart before a horse.

As for infinity, I find it useful to think of many things as existing in the infinite-dimensional space, as it keeps one's mind open to possibilities and does not box their mind in a narrow model - for example, instead of the typically used personality compasses with a finite number of axes (that do have their use), I find it better to use a compass with an infinite number of dimensions, leading to assessing each individual's psychology for what it is. Mathematicians also really like talking about infinite-dimensional spaces, as such spaces always offer unlimited field for experimentation and theorem-building.

@Happy_Killbot ; Infinity-Eternity is a reality and far beyond human comprehension as mankind is constrained by Time and naively believes that all things have a genesis and a finality. The implications of eternity are founded in the truism that mankind is created in the spiritual image of the infinite God with an eternal spirit and that life constrained by flesh and Time is nothing more than preparation for the infinite; unfortunately, "many" will throw their eternity away in the foolishness and hopelessness of atheism and  deadly religion and only a "few" will find life in Eternity by grace through faith in Jesus as Lord.

@RickeyD If the universe is infinite, that means that every possibility exists somewhere, provided it is logically possible. This means that someplace there is a world that is just like earth in every way except Jesus never existed. There is a world where everyone is a toaster. There are countless worlds where the physics are completely incapable of producing life, or worlds where life is possible but doesn't exist. There are worlds where everything is just the same, except the planet is destroyed by some cosmic cataclysm for no reason and without warning. There are worlds where heaven and hell are real, and worlds where the virtues and vices are flipped, such that the evil receive eternal reward in heaven and the good damnation in hell. There are infinite realities where the devil is real, and in some of them he invented Jesus. Whatever is possible is true, that is what is meant by infinity, and it doesn't distinguish or play favorites.

If it is possible, it exists. Period. How can there be any abstract reason for any particular action, when in some other universe something different happened? The only logical explanation for this is that there is no abstract reason for anything, everything that exists does because it has to, and in whatever way it exists it has infinite counterparts in other potential existences.

Has it ever occurred to you, that if there is an infinite afterlife, that there can be no difference between multiple forms of it? Somewhere contained within any infinity is all other infinities. This means that going to heaven to be tortured forever or going to hell to be eternally rewarded is no different than going to heaven for eternal reward or going to hell for eternal torture. They can not be different if they are infinite.

@Happy_Killbot ; The Earth and this Universe are unique...one of a kind and there are no copies or duplicates. The Earth was created for the struggle between Yeshua and Satan and when that struggle has accomplished its purposes, this Earth and the Heavens and Time will be ended as we know it and a New Heaven and Earth will be created and paradise lost will be paradise restored. The afterlife is a gift of our Creator for the faithful who have served Him as He has been victorious over Satan; the faithful having allied with Him in this victory through faith and obedience will be given eternal life. You, as a godless and mindless atheist, will die in your sins and suffer a similar fate as your father, Satan, in Hell lest you repent. You're grasping at ethereal straws void knowledge and wisdom.

@RickeyD I think you missed the point of this thread entirely...

We are assuming that the earth and the universe ARE NOT unique for this discussion.

There is evidence suggesting that this is in fact the case.
At some point in the distant past, the universe went through a phase of cosmic inflation,
Stars formed, planets coalesced, and on at least one of them life took root.

@Happy_Killbot ; Your assumptions are irrelevant. God the Holy Spirit, beginning in Genesis 1, has thoroughly explained our Universe and Who, what, where, when, why and how...but you insist on seeking answers that cannot be found anywhere but via the Holy Spirit. This is the foolishness of a man seeking to justify his sin.

@RickeyD It's not my assumption, its OUR assumption for this thread, if you are going to act like a child because you don't have anything to say, then please do everyone a favor and say nothing instead of wasting everyone's time.

I mean, it's not like you don't have cards to play here, maybe you just refuse to recognize them because of your egocentric attitude toward the potential existence of god, which is ironically, the strongest evidence against the existence of one.

@Happy_Killbot ; You're mistaken in the foolishness and blindness of your atheism...there is ZERO evidence negating our Creator and overwhelming evidence substantiating His reality...you simply "choose" to ignore it due to the ramifications of truth and acknowledgment that our Creator has authority over you and your life and will judge you in Eternity. Enjoy your foolishness, sorry for interrupting your wisdom-less discussion.

@RickeyD We are talking about infinite realities here, this has NOTHING to do with the possible existence of a god, gods, or other mythical beings.

Did you even read anything at the top?

We are talking about philosophy here, not your sky daddy.

If you have nothing important to say, kindly see yourself out instead of acting like an insolent bratty snowflake!
