Should we celebrate Thanksgiving?

Debate Information

Thanksgiving is a great holiday, but.....lets think about the history of the Holiday.  Essentially, Native Americans welcomed Pilgrims and then we brutally exterminated them and took their land.  We now celebrate the holiday, as we are the winners in this whole thing, but not sure if it was fair to the Native Americans.
Since the holiday was essentially based on eventual genocide, maybe celebrating it isn't the best idea.

I will argue agaisnt it.  I love the tradition, but don't like the fact that it's based on eventual genocide of Native Americans.  Would they welcome us at that time knowing what we did to them and their subsequent generations?

ViceRegent The white man force native Americans (Indians as they were first called) to move west took their land and killed many of them. The Native Americans found out to late that helping white man would hurt them as they did not know the white man would harm and dislocate them.

Who is this "we".  I'm not a Pilgrim.  I don't even know any Pilgrims.  From what I know of history though, the Pilgrims didn't exterminate anyone.  In fact, they formed a defensive alliance with the Wampanoags, lest the Wampanoags be overrun by the rival and more powerful Pequot and Narragansett tribes.  Referring to "native Americans" is erroneous; it would be like referring to "Europeans".  The only thing they have in common is geography.  But the experience of the French is not that of the Spanish or the Germans or the Italians.  Likewise, the experience of each tribe of native Americans is different, and hostilities among them were common.

I am celebrating today and encourage all fellow DebateIslanders to do that.
It's a great tradition for giving thanks and helping others.  Alternative would be to mind your own business and be hostile towards your neighbors, not a great idea.  The Indian tribe helped the pilgrims to settle in this country and Pilgrims and mos Americans are thankful for that.
While what happened later to Native Americans is a tragedy, it shouldn't ne attributed to that particular event.  What they did to help Pilgrims was a right humane thing to do and is a good reason to express thanks.
    Happy Thanksgiving!
