    I have been attacked exactly once in my life, and the police was nowhere to be found. The reality of the world is that you are very unlikely get attacked at the central square with police officers walking around; the criminals are not fools and they will attack people in a dark corner where there is no help to be found. What the police really provides is retaliative tools, as well as saving people from static situations such as being taken a hostage - but police cannot do anything about actually preventing immediate violence.

    People like to object to this with the claim that when you are attacked, you do not have time to pull out a weapon anyway. Well, it heavily depends on the situation. If someone sneaks up on you from the back with a gun or a knife, then yes, you cannot do anything. In most cases, however, this is not how violence occurs, and usually there is, at least, some time to react to danger, or to take some precautions in case of potential danger.

    In my case, I saw the attack coming and could defend myself if I had a weapon with me.
    There would be less people having guns to kill you with if there was a gun ban

    @cheesycheese ;

    The attack I described happened in a county with some of the strictest gun laws in the world.

    Killing is a very rare outcome of an assault, and in the vast majority of cases the attackers are either after your belongings, or after your feelings.

    The world does not work the way you want it to work, and criminals have little regard to your "bans". What happens in practice is: law-abiding citizens (who were not out to harm anyone in the first place) are deprived of means to defend themselves, while criminals because of their nature ignore all the laws and get what they need on the black market. Good luck trying to convince the criminal that the law is just; the criminal will have fun listening to your narrative, while pulling valuables out of your bag at a gunpoint.

    No, not abolish or ban, but some regulation. If the government is going to have guns, normal mentally stable people should too to check the balance of power in case we end up with a dictator. I also support stand your ground laws which rarely target racial minorities.

    Hmm which is going to sell more guns a legal buisness that sells ak-47s for $300 or a black market buisness that is forced to sell guns for $3000 it is also going to be more difficult to find gun sellers cause you cant advertise a black market buisness without getting arrested and besides india restricts guns and you dont hear of an indian mass shooting every week despite the fact that america has less than a quarter of indias population

  • According to data from the CDC NVDRS states, in 2015 (latest year we have accurate data for) you were more likely to kill yourself with a gun than kill someone else with it.
    This means that we need to work on our background checks and mental health systems. Not our guns.

    If someone is good enough, it wont matter how small the mag is, they’ll just switch it out super fast. Silencers also don’t make guns almost silent. They just make it so you don’t have to wear ear protection when shooting the gun. A gun is still pretty loud with a silencer. And finally, if you ban all guns, we have a giant black market. All it takes is a tor browser, a VPN, and ten dollars and you have access to more illegal weapon than you could ever imagine.

    Exactly america needs better background checks however right now you can get a gun at an age lower than the legal drinking bans

    I clicked the wrong answer. I do support gun rights within reason.
