If what you really mean is the Republican party vs the Democratic party, then as of now the Republican party seems to be the only sensible option: the leadership of the Democratic party has lost its mind and gave platform away to unhinged socialists. Socialism kills off economies, and almost any other possible system is better.
The Republican party has its own issues, and a lot of what they claim they stand for is really a hypocrisy - but that is going to be the case in any party of such an enormous size, as it is impossible for millions people to share a political platform without some contradictions arising.
Something happened in the Democratic party around 2014, and they started quickly descending into authoritarian policies and identity politics. The trends have always been there, but they never developed so plainly and rapidly before. I blame the generation that was born after the Cold War and has never known what socialist states are like. They started gaining voting right around a decade ago, and by now form a very significant fraction of the voter base.
We can see these trends all over the world: old authoritarian ideologies, such as socialism and nationalism, are on the rise. I do not think it random. I do think these trends are temporary, as these ideologies are not sustainable and the Western civilisation has been through them before and emerged victorious - but we may be in for a very unpleasant period in the future.
it depends on what your most important values/wants are The current batch of Democrats running for 2020 want to infringe on the constitution, take more of my money away from me and give it to others including illegals. They have NOTHING to offer to me nor are they even trying. Democrats pander big time to minorities, the poor and illegals, they don't care about any other groups. It's painfully obvious. I'm not sure what your situation is, but look at their platforms and see if any of those would benefit you enough that you'd want to vote for them.

What do you mean by "republicanism" and "liberalism"? Republicanism is advocacy for a particular form of government (like monarchy, parliamentary system, etc) and liberalism is a political philosophy not concerned with forms of government, they don't really relate to each other...
We actually NEED two parties! We need liberalism and we need conservatism, but, mostly we need democracy! We need people within those parties that work FOR THE PEOPLE, not for special interests! We NEED religious freedom, not just ONE religion. We NEED fair taxation where everyone pays their fair share. We NEED affordable, not "FREE" health care and education. We NEED, not income "equality", but we DON'T need 90% of the nations treasure in the hands of a few! We DON'T need CEO's writing their own salaries and severances to where they "get more than Jesus would be worth".
There can be no reasonable argument that "If we give them more money, they'll create jobs." They "created jobs" back when they were being taxed in the 70 - 90% range! THEY created that logic, and many have bought into it! We NEED what we started with and let slip away! Government OF, BY and FOR the PEOPLE, not the FEW! The few can exist, they just don't NEED to be SO GREEDY! We NEED capitalism, it just NEEDS to be somewhat controlled. We can use socialism, as we have for years, it just has to follow the Constitution … as does religion.
I would say the identity politics, and authoritarian views(collectivism) came from post-modernist politics and sociology. Not so much sociology in and of itself, but post-modernism applied in social manners. Like it or not, post-modernism is the dominant philosophy in western society. We ALL speak the language of post-modernism, even if we're not aware of it. That being said, I do think both conservatives and liberals adhere to postmodern logic, it's not just liberals. Because it's a philosophy that attempts to look at society with relativity in mind, it sort of focuses on empathy when thinking of society. That is a good thing but, some extreme viewpoints of it tend to put individuality on the backburner, or minimizes it altogether. That's a bad thing, and I don't think either party or ideology are innocent of that phenom. Liberals have identity politics, but conservatives want to encourage identity pride (white pride, or nationalist pride, or even western pride), but when those two ideologies are put under a microscope, we quickly find they're really the same thing and will encourage the same outcome of losing the self. I don't disagree with you about the Democratic party going off the deep end around 2014 or so, but I would also say that the Republicans have chosen reactionary politics to counter the left's ideology, rather than use logical reasoning to counter them. The Republicans are just trying to do the reverse ideological approach which turns out being the same as the Democrats approach.
Libertarians are sometimes needlessly and recklessly radical, but they can also have the power to see the entire spectrum of a certain ideology and cherry-pick what best applies to themselves. It may turn out to be a confusing hodgepodge of an ideological mess, but what's important is it applies to themSELF as opposed to the royal we. Libertarians can also have the most centrist views and they can look at a topic logically rather than ideologically. I guess I just wrote a lot of filler just to say, be independent. No party platform will ever apply to YOU!!!
