How Useful Is Religion?

We all know that organised religion was originally invented by the ruling class to command control over the masses. In those days the common people were largely uneducated and profoundly superstitious so that such a system of manipulation worked in well with the times.
Of course, nowadays, with the exception of fundamentalist states, most people would not take a bar of that sort of oppression based on a contrived story of a God being creator and master. Nevertheless, some of us still use religion as a means to satisfy an ulterior motive. Here are a few examples that spring to mind, You may have some which you may wish to add to the list.
1) Religion is quite often used (as was originally intended) by heads of families to control their offspring, physical and mental abuse are meted out in the name of God.
2) Preachers, of course, who make a living out of spreading religion use the fear and guilt factors to great effect in order to maintain their numbers and gain power over their unassuming victims.
3) Those who have a particular prejudice or hatred (e.g. Homophobia) use religion as a shield to cowardly hide behind ("I am only quoting what the Bible says").
