More specifically, do theists use their religion as an excuse to harbour their own fears and prejudices?
Let's take a look at, say, awww yes, here we go, homophobia just as an example.
We all (should) know that homophobia is a fear of gay people. Fear, of course, arises from ignorance, fear of the unknown (or refusal to know). Add a modicum of arrogance to the equation and we have what we commonly call bigotry.
A pretty disgusting scenario really but, wait, here is a solution. It's not a cure but a neat way around being labelled as a bigot.
Just join a Church. You don't have to believe in all that God crap, you just use the institution for your own self-centred benefit. Just build up the air of decency over the whole thing...."Well, you kneow, our Church is genuine and has a high standing in the community, a lot of high people are in my group you kneow. And anyway, I don't hate homos per se, it's just the Church's view that we don't like what they do, you kneow. I mean, they are unnatural you kneow and of course they choose to flick their wrists and walk fast in a funny way....eoww how quaint.
So, if you have feelings of hatred towards others just join a bunch of like-minded bigots and make it all look somehow decent, at least, in your own mind.
