The Christian and the Law?

Debate Information

The Christian and the Law - a Christian's clarification-explanation-response concerning Rabbinical-Jewish attacks and insults directed at the Christian who espouses salvation by grace through faith in Messiah Jesus apart from the works of the Law...

A discussion,

I argue that the Covenant of Law concerning ceremonial-dietary-civil regulations is not relevant in the Covenant of Grace (Galatians 2:16; Romans 3:20; Colossians 2:16; Romans 14) and that mankind cannot find righteousness (a right standing) with God the Father by attempting to keep a Law that only condemns through its defining of sin yet offers no atonement for same (Romans 3:20). I wholly concur that the moral aspects of the Sinai Commandments and the 613-Levitical Laws are immutable (Matthew 24:35) and they have been reiterated/articulated by Messiah within the Covenant of Grace (Law of the Spirit) established in Messiah’s blood (Matthew 26:28), but mankind does not attain righteousness by attempted obedience to the works of the Law but by grace (unmerited favor not earned by human effort) through faith-believing in Jesus Christ as God and Mediator for sin, alone (John 14:6; John 3:16-18).

The works of the moral Law, those articulated within the Sinai Commandments/Levitical Law and written upon our heart as the Law of Conscience/Natural moral law by our Creator (Romans 2:15) and our obedience to same do certainly become relevant concerning righteousness SUBSEQUENT to the establishment of our relationship with God the Father by grace through faith in Jesus and having received the indwelling Holy Spirit as our Seal and Guarantor of relationship (Ephesians 2:8-9). It is our obedience to the moral law, established in both the Covenant of Law and the Covenant of Grace and infused within our heart and mind by the Spirit, that verify and validate the authenticity of our confession in, faith in, Jesus Christ as our God and Mediator for our sin. Our pursuit of obedience to the moral Law of God SUBSEQUENT to our confession (our justification) is indicative of the process of “sanctification” that is a work of the indwelling Holy Spirit (Ephesians 1:13-14; 1 John 2:27; John 16:13; John 14:16) who prepares the faithful for a life of servitude in the Kingdom of God manifesting subsequent to the death of the body in Time (Galatians 5:16-26).

The Covenant of Law articulated within the Hebrew Scriptures was given as a bulwark to constrain Israel’s transgressions for a specific dispensation (Galatians 3:19) and pointed Israel to their need for an Intercessor (John 1:29, 36) and guided Israel in the ways of holiness as God is Holy (Leviticus 19:2; 20:7; 20:26; 21:8; 1 Peter 1:16) as did the blood sacrifices (Hebrews 10) that pointed Israel’s children to Messiah’s atonement, but there was no, is no, lasting regenerative atonement in the Law; hence, the necessity for Messiah and His blood sacrifice at Golgotha (John 3:16; Hebrews 10; John 14:6).

Seeking obedience to a Law in order to attain righteousness (a right standing) with God the Father is eternal futility (Romans 9:30-33) as no one can work sufficiently or obey sufficiently to garner God’s favor as we're all under the condemnation of sin (Romans 3:23; James 2:10); what the Law could not do as it simply defines sin and articulate our unworthiness as violators of that Law (Romans 3:20), God the Father did for us by sending His dear Son to fulfill the Law in perfection for you and me (Matthew 5:17) and then impart-impute the perfection of Jesus Christ in-and-over our life when we agree to approach God His Way (2 Corinthians 5:21); that is, by believing in our heart – confessing with our mouth that Jesus Christ is our God who died to pay our sin-debt, a debt we could not pay through human effort or obedience to a Law (John 3:16-18; Romans 10:9-10; Ephesians 2:8-9; Galatians 2:16; Romans 3:20).
