Who Is The Village Clown?

Debate Information

How times change.

A few hundred years ago superstition was rife and common folk lived in constant fear of the unknown and what could be lurking in the shadows.
The ruling classes cashed in big time on this condition of deep-rooted ignorance and invented religion in order to control and fleece the masses.

Then we have the village clown who wasn't necessarily an outcast. In fact, he was usually accepted by the community as being some form of a disabled person. He would often be indiscrete, contrary, unscrupulous and spill the beans about anything and anyone.

And you could bet that he would have been different for the sake of it and be an atheist. "Aw, hey, yukkedee-do, God ain't real, haw haw". Had it not been for his title of village clown, anyone even whispering such profanity would be whisked off by the authorities and tied to a stake, surrounded by firewood.

Fast forward (don't you just love the crumby cliche) to modern times and of course, the tables have changed. We are far more educated in free societies where accurate information and facts are readily available to everyone. We now know that commonfolk in days of yore were treated like mushrooms in the dark and fed copious amounts of crap. All the myths about God have been completely debunked and it is only a few of the defiant stragglers who cling to what is now regarded as absurd belief or "faith".

So, if you are one of the stragglers still clinging precariously to the imaginary straws of religion, isn't it time you started wondering why your workmates standing around the water cooler suddenly go silent when you walk past?
Isn't it time you stopped being the village clown and start living in the real world?

Atheism. It's for real people.

    Sounds like Covid today.

    Spot on.
Fears are always based on what we don't know and the biggest fear of all is the fear of fear itself.
