Do Placebos Actually Work?

Debate Information

We all (should) know what placebos do. It's a bit like alternative therapies and religion, they are designed to do absolutely nothing.

But wait, there is a twist. Pharmaceutical companies are required to undertake extensive testing of new drugs out in the field before they are certified for public consumption. Part of the testing involves supplying some guinea-pig patients with placebos without them knowing it. Interestingly enough, a certain number of these patients return positive feedback in claiming that the placebos actually work.
How could this be?

Studies have shown that people taking placebos often report feeling better or experiencing reduced symptoms of various conditions, including pain, fatigue, depression, and anxiety.

    Hello:

Pay attention to the words..  Over the counter products are "clinically proven" to work..  Clinically proven is NOT FDA tested.  "Clinically proven" is snake oil pretending to be the real thing.  It's made up hocus pokus that isn't even close to FDA tested..

If you fell for the "clinically proven" rope a dope, would you admit you got conned???
