Let's face it, and, as we all (should) know, religion is as much in decline as a ball bearing on a slippery dip. Christians are leaving churches in droves and, even though Islam is on the rise, it is only poaching defecting Christians anyway.....albeit with the help of a bit of ballistic persuasion. But even Islam and all the other "impoverished world religions" will quickly slip down into obscurity given that those who are compulsorily religionized will be more educated and wiser in the coming years... I would estimate that all religion will be extinct within the next fifty years, maybe sooner. Buddhism will still be around but it was never really a religion anyway and will be more specifically used as a style code for architects and interior designers.
However, civilization has seen a pattern of religions come and go over the millennia, revival after a hiatus, so to speak, and it would be interesting if we could predict what the next religious craze will be.
We might see Nazism as the next religion for example, and the new Messiah of course, would be Adolf himself. After all, we are looking at the same pattern with the birth of Christianity; a narcistic, charismatic leader who thought he was the son of God (although Hitler wasn't that bad) who was loved by his followers yet hated and persecuted by everyone else. In say, four hundred years time, a cult of outcast hermits will find a copy of Mein Kampf buried in a cave and sell the concept to the Chinese government (they will be ruling the world again by then) who will find it quite handy to control the unruly masses.
That is merely a hypothetical example but, who will be the next Messiah?
