No, it isn't an ad hominem to explain that you're not very intelligent (i.e. dumb). It's a factual statement intended to explain why you can't make an argument like a normal person, and instead insist on spamming my debate with silly image posts which distract from reasoned debate.

You claimed it was a "hasty generalisation" to allege that Americans are a dumbed down population. Since the debate is about a general population it is nonsensical to attack it for being a generalisation, and completely untrue to call it "hasty".

If you don't want to have a debate about it then just leave the thread please. I'm sick of your infantile image bombing.

It is not possible (or at least completely impractical) to poll all 330 million people in the United States every time researchers want to investigate something, which is why no peer-reviewed quantitative study ever does that. Everybody from psychologists to political scientists have to work with sample sizes smaller than the entire population. If your argument basically amounts to, "Yeah, well, the next thousand people won't be as dumb", then I wouldn't count on it mate.

Firstly, thanks for an actual civil response for a change. Secondly, that is correct. Still, the sample size needs to be large enough to warrant any significant results both practically as well as statistically. Then there is the issue of how you are defining dumb. If by dumb you are talking about IQ then the mean IQ of the USA is 98 which is two numbers lower than the UK which is 100 which is two numbers lower than Western European countries which is 102.

However, 98 is hardly different from 100. Still, there are other nations with a mean far lower than 98. So, that just proves in terms of IQ Americans are hardly the least intelligent in the world. https://personalityanalysistest.com/average-iq-by-country/median-iq-by-country-guide/

However, you are drawing the conclusion that most Americans are dumb due to mostly small percentages of subgroups believing in or being ignorant about certain things. You are factually incorrect here and logically flawed. 29% of Americans being wrong about specific things does not equate to most of them being wrong about everything.

    Your logical fallacy is:

And also in your case not understand this and thus draw completely erroneous conclusions.

    NOMNOM's logical fallacy is

NOMNOM made the argument that all Americans are the dumbest in the world (it's there in the OP). He drew his conclusions based on a select few stats that surrounded different studies with different percentages as to what Americans believe in or are ignorant of.

He's basically taken a list of stats here, summed them up as one, and then concluded that All Americans are dumb because of this. His argument is so flawed on so many levels!

His fallacy is faulty/hasty generalization blatantly. He said that the Americans are the dumbest in the world based on a little bit of data with studies actually differentiating from one another then summed them up as one whole thing, and then concludes a whole country must be the dumbest in the world. When called out he then asserts he was talking generally (AKA form special pleading, backtracking, whatever you want to call it). Even if he was to speak in an actual general sense he would still be wrong.

May I remind him what he said to @Maycaesar here:

Your backtracking is only going to tie you up in knots. It's much simpler to simply admit that what you wrote initially was nonsense than try to refine it with further nonsense. Almost every person in the world falls into this prideful trap.

Firstly, thanks for an actual civil response for a change.

If you want civil responses then stop hijacking my debates with huge jpg images like a four year old child and simply type out your arguments like a normal person.

    Secondly, that is correct.

Between 90 and 95 percent of everything I write is correct.

Still, the sample size needs to be large enough to warrant any significant results both practically as well as statistically.

Even better, one may cross-reference the results of multiple polls to build a bigger picture. There are dozens of polls which imply that the United States population is not very bright, at least four of which I have used during this very debate.

Then there is the issue of how you are defining dumb. If by dumb you are talking about IQ then the mean IQ of the USA is 98 which is two numbers lower than the UK which is 100 which is two numbers lower than Western European countries which is 102.

Which is a mean average taken across the entire population. Incredibly, after whining about samples sizes being too small, when a full census is taken you are still not happy.

Although, I will agree with you that I am not necessarily talking about IQ.

However, 98 is hardly different from 100

I don't think you understand how either statistics or IQs work. It's a huge difference because you're using a national average. Hong Kong has the highest national average IQ in the world and it is only 10 points higher at 108. A single smart person in a room full of dumb people will drive up an average. For example, if 9 people have an IQ of 90, and then the next person has an IQ of 170, that averages out at 98.

Still, there are other nations with a mean far lower than 98.

The United States is the richest country in the world and comes 29th on the list of average IQs. It's on a par with Mongolia.

So, that just proves in terms of IQ Americans are hardly the least intelligent in the world.

No, it proves that the average IQ in America isn't as bad as in third world countries where the inhabitants are illiterate and can't afford schools. As I just explained, one intelligent person in a room full of 9 other dummies drives up the mean average to 98.

Really though, I'm not talking about IQ. The American problem isn't IQ. It's more a problem of lack of critical thinking skills, resultant from mass indoctrination into religion and other similarly antiquated belief systems. Americans in general are suffering from the effects of an isolationist culture which has largely separated itself from reality.

However, you are drawing the conclusion that most Americans are dumb due to mostly small percentages of subgroups believing in or being ignorant about certain things

    Thanks for letting me know.

You are factually incorrect here and logically flawed.

I can't be factually incorrect about a claim I didn't make. Try searching that site you keep spamming images from for something called the strawman fallacy.

29% of Americans being wrong about specific things does not equate to most of them being wrong about everything.
You are cherry-picking a single piece of data from a smorgasbord of poll results posted in this thread and using it to attack a claim I didn't even make. Stop being a dummy.

Explain something to me please. How are you actually dumb enough to post a huge image of text explaining what a strawman fallacy is and then follow that up with a strawman fallacy? I didn't make the argument that "all Americans the dumbest in the world". Not only does that not make grammatical sense, but you can clearly see that the OP is a question, not a statement.

When you post a question, followed by an argument in favor of a particular answer to the question, especially when you present it as a yes or no, question, people are going to assume that you're giving your answer.

And on that matter, let me remind you of the question. It was: Are Americans the most dumbed down population in world history?

You asked if they where the Most dumb, not if they where dumb, and for them to be the Most dumb, all the other countries have to be smarter than them, and you have said nothing on the subject of other countries, therefor you haven't proven anything.

If you polls aren't evidence then why did you post polls? It seems to me like you're just bullying Americans without actually trying to have any debate on the matter.

And with that aside, it was only after the first post I made that I noticed you had said the most dumbed down population in world history, I imagine you aren't much of a historian, are you? Are they more dumbed down than the people of Cambodia under Pol Pot? Who literally murdered intellectuals and wanted to make everyone a peasant? How about Macias Nguema? That is you trawling halfway down a page in a bizarre effort to find anything which might help you avoid having to admit that you objectively mislabelled the question posed in the OP as a statement.

I'm trying to explain to Zeus that generalisations are not a fallacy (provided you're clear and upfront about the fact that they are generalisations).
Is it a general claim? Or a question?
The claim is that Americans are the most dumbed down population in the world, and the question is whether you agree with the claim.
When you made this you where acting as if you hade made a claim about Americans
I did. Without the claim the question simply becomes: Are?

I am aware of that, and yes, it's very bad. America has done horrible things

Well, I'm glad we can agree on something. I'm sorry if we've gotten off on the wrong foot. You shouldn't consider this thread to be an attack against all Americans because I'm perfectly aware that there are some highly intelligent people in America.

As I explained earlier in another post, I don't see the problem in America as being one of low average IQ. I see it as "the effects of an isolationist culture which has largely separated itself from reality." America is like North Korea on steroids.

Americans do tend to be very ignorant of the world outside of America, while many populations in other parts of the world are more knowledgeable about America.

It may have a lot to do with how big the country is, consider that people tend to primarily be knowledgeable about their geographic area, Europeans know a lot about Europe, and Asians know a lot about Asia,  America is so big that it might as well be a geographic area, it has many different cultures in it.

America also tends to exercise a lot of influence on the rest of the world, they make you know about them and their culture. That's why everyone, at least a little bit, knows about what happens in America.

I seriously doubt that this was your original intention, considering that you had many opportunities to clarify this, and only did it very recently, but I'm not going to argue with you about it, it would be pointless, neither of us can prove anything. I'll just take your word for it an forget about it. So with that behind us, do you agree with the original statement about Americans being the most dumbed down population in world history?

Americans do tend to be very ignorant of the world outside of America, while many populations in other parts of the world are more knowledgeable about America.

Again, I agree. See? We have some similar views when we put the petty squabbling aside.

It may have a lot to do with how big the country is, consider that people tend to primarily be knowledgeable about their geographic area, Europeans know a lot about Europe, and Asians know a lot about Asia,  America is so big that it might as well be a geographic area, it has many different cultures in it.

Yes, there's probably some truth to that. However, I think America also has its own unique culture and traditionally it's known for exporting rather than importing culture. I'm European and I know a lot more about America than I do about Europe, partly because of the language barriers which exist between myself and other European nations, but also because I've been exposed to a lot more American culture.

America also tends to exercise a lot of influence on the rest of the world, they make you know about them and their culture. That's why everyone, at least a little bit, knows about what happens in America.

Exactly. This is what I was getting at. It's quite strange really how times have changed over my lifetime. Growing up, I remember that everybody wanted to be American, or at least live in America. It was generally regarded as the coolest place on Earth. These days it's the precise opposite.

Just a heads up Nom in case you didn't know , Anarchist is American and has the IQ of a sea sponge. This id-iot is a David Icke groupie who believes the Holocaust never happened and world leaders are actually reptiles dressed up as humans ( he's probably a societal norm in his hick state)

Also his idea of Anarchy seems to be covering his mouth and booing at various political figures on TV ,most likely keeping his mouth half covered so as not to disturb the neigbours

I don't really care to be honest. What matters is that I asked a question and you mislabelled it as a statement. It doesn't become a statement even if I have an opinion about the answer.

    Quit making things up swine.

You really are a detestable creature, not only do you refuse to have an intelligent debate with anyone who disagrees with you on anything more than something as minor the best way to impose your already existing ideas, but you have to make everyone miserable even when they choose to ignore your pathetic existence.

It's called backtracking on what he said bruh. @anarchist100. Yeah, he asked the question (he might have edited that though). But he still made the claim that Americans are the dumbest people in the world. He drew this conclusion on a list of various mutually exclusive data sets with most of them being tiny sample sizes (he blatantly has no idea how statistics work here). And as you said he gave no comparison polls either. Nor did he also define what he meant by dumb. Nonetheless, his argument is still flawed both factually and on a fallacious level.

Actually, he did believe Americans were the dumbest people in the world before he even posted this thread as per his comments in other debate threads whereby he insults people for being American even when they're not American (LMAO). Now, if you look at the date of the link he posted it's very recently this year it was published. It's obvious he quickly googled this and used it to confirm his preconceived notions (AKA confirmation bias).

FYI, if you ever want to play Poker NOMNOM would be a great guy to play with; you would win a lot of money; this guy just loves to show all of his cards!

I know that I have had too much rum when I read it as, "My roommate said her philosophy class was hard, and I am hard, too." The actual continuation was a little disappointing!

As for this topic, it stinks enough that I do not want to touch it with a 10-foot pole. Ideas like "population of country X is the most dumbed down in world history" do not deserve being entertained, and people who champion them are good candidates for members of the very population they are talking about. It does not surprise me that a person creating this thread is the same person who lacks basing reading comprehension skills. How did that saying go? "Your thoughts about others are a mirror into your soul?" Someone who thinks such thoughts about 320+ million people is... someone I would not share this cup of rum with. *sip*

  • I agree with you but sometimes one just needs to goof off from being serious once in a while.  Besides, this isn't a formal debate. I guess that is part of the problem though; people see "casual" and think that means anything goes.

I understand that, but somehow even laughing at ideas like this leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Silly and ridiculous ideas can be fun; but this kind of ideas is just obnoxious, it is an expression of the darkest sides of human psyche, and I feel that every time I get touched by it, a small part of me dies and I become a little more cynical.

There is something corrupting about negatively judging others. I cannot quite put my finger on it, but somehow when one bestows a damning judgement on someone else, they also seem to apply that judgement to themselves: "This person possesses this horrible and unacceptable quality. Am I completely free from this quality myself though? Apparently not. Oh no..." I find that, whenever I am about to negatively judge someone, the best strategy is to take a deep breath and to think about something else. This way, when I meet truly amazing people, I can connect with them on a very deep level and not have to deal with "cleaning the pipe" of the dark thoughts that spoil the interaction.

I haven't backtracked on anything. You just can't read. You have your knickers in a twist because I dared question the intellectual integrity of Americans and you're too mind-numbingly arrogant to ever criticise your own culture.

Yeah, he asked the question (he might have edited that though)

The website forces participants to structure their debate titles as questions so your conspiracy theory doesn't even make any sense. Your contributions are thoroughly useless to this platform because ninety percent of the time you refuse to even type anything and just spam the board with images. When you do type something it's invariably a nonsensical personal attack rooted in your own false conclusions.

In short, you're too arrogant to ever close your big mouth for five seconds and realise that you don't know anything.

And yet here you are, whining like an infant and doing a marvellous job of contradicting yourself. You don't want to engage me directly because you're a coward, so instead you just come in and snipe from a distance. It's pathetic. If you think the topic stinks then don't participate in it. Simple. Nobody is going to miss your snobbish rhetoric because it reads like it was written by a mildly autistic 17th century plantation owner.

That was always a baseless accusation. You are truly a waste of life, you can't just make things up about people when you can't debate them. Why would you even need to do that anyway? How would you know Deechild? You've never tried it? This may shock and amaze you, but intelligent people change over time, and become more logical,

Intelligent people where I'm from don't believe reptiles ruled the world

I know that you don't seem to be into this, you'd rather just keep believing what you believe now for the rest of your life. You're missing out on a lot.

Again I'm not the one believed reptile overlords rule the world

That was always a baseless accusation.

It wasn't actually you asked me for proof the Holocaust happened

You are truly a waste of life, you can't just make things up about people when you can't debate them.

We both know that's not true , you like your friend fellow racist Bogend run when confronted by reasoned argument

Why would you even need to do that anyway? You where literally arguing with someone who had almost no evidence whatsoever for their claims, are you that dumb? you're just a worthless person.

I know you had no evidence for your claims you don't believe them anymore because I educated you so it was actually you who were that dumb until I educated you .....What ? Oh you're welcome

How would you know Deechild? You've never tried it? For that matter I don't think you've ever debated people who disagree with you in any major way, how silly you must be, all the things you did account for, you could listen to what others have to say and better your own understanding of the world, yet you choose to sacrifice truth in order to keep believing that which makes you feel comfortable.

Indeed , yet you were the one who believed in reptilian overlords and now you don't after I destroyed your worldview on such , also it's actually you who rarely expresses a view or engages on  any topic as we both know you cannot on account of your pretty obvious lack of an education

There you go again, making stuff up, you clearly don't want to have any sort of reasonable debate.

Ahh so you didn't believe reptilian overlords ruled the world after admitting you used to believe such , interesting

Well you just admitted you don't believe as you did on account of my influence and you just admitted I had the powers to push your buttons whenever I wish .....my work here is done

You keep making things up about me, you're not worth my time, what you make up says nothing about me, just you.

Well you admitted you believed in reptilian overlords and that the Holocaust never happened so yet again you need to acknowledge this to yourself and growth may follow ......ps good luck with the job hunting
