Should we use draconian measures to stop global climate change?

Debate Information

Position: For
Global climate change also known as global warming or anthropogenic climate change. Has it come to this that we should very severe measures? How much value should we put on freedom and tolerance? At what point does excessive freedom and tolerance equal callousness and oppression?

One example of a draconian measure is Billy Nye wanting to jail climate change deniers. Closing all coal power plants would be another.

First time in a formal debate on debateisland so I will probably make a few mistakes.

There is a 97% scientific consensus on climate change.

Five million people a year are dying from climate change. We are in the middle of a sixth mass extinction. Oceans acidifcation is taking place.

Glaciers are shrinking, polar bears are drowning or becoming skinny, stronger hurricanes, more heatwaves, droughts, and more. Zombie viruses could be thawed. There is the small chance of a Venus scenario if methane under arctic ice is released.

Climate change makes systemic racism and inequities worse. We have the science but not the political will. A major part of the reason we lack the political will is due to disinformation campaigns by the fossil fuel industry. The sooner we reach net zero emissions the better.

Jail climate change deniers, shut down the coal plants, whatever it takes to save the planet. Draconian measures need to be used to stop climate change before the situation becomes worse.

    Zombie viruses could be thawed.

This is false because conspiracy theories aren't real. There are no aliens on the moon or zombies in the ice. This conspiracy thinking is dangerous and you only believe it because of a need to feel like you are in control.

Responding to Nomenclature's round one. There are zombie viruses thawing in the melting permafrost, here is my proof.

"Zombie’ viruses are thawing in melting permafrost because of climate change"
By Michael Birnbaum and  Ellen Francis Updated December 2, 2022

"In November 2022, European researchers announced they had reanimated a virus that had been frozen for almost 50,000 years. The researchers cautioned that their work points to a potential public health risk posed by climate change." Bethania Palma

There is main stream media saying this. My arguments contains none of the elements of conspiracy thinking and therefore are not conspiracy theories.

The longer we wait to deal with climate change the more damage that is done.

    @Dreamer

Zombies are not real and there will be no zombie apocalypse. Here is my proof.

There will not be a zombie apocalypse. Many people shout “boo” when I say this at conventions. If anything, the news this week, with real people suffering real tragedy, is sign enough that we do not need to call something a zombie apocalypse for it to be awful. As I said at comic-con, “We’re humans. We have plenty of ways to end our civilization without zombies.” Zombie movies allow us to ponder these issues in the afforded displacement of campy fiction and movies. Our civilization has made it through some tough times, but the zombie movies teach us that there is a danger in taking for granted the importance of community, of compromise, and of civility.

    https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/grand-rounds/201206/zombies-are-not-real

Just because a trash rag like the Washington Post wants to call something a zombie doesn't make it a zombie.
There is main stream media saying this.
Then that's a pretty good reason not to believe it. Mainstream media once claimed a werewolf was apprehended in an English coastal town, and that wasn't true either.

Zombies. Honestly. And you actually have the brazen audacity to accuse other people of "conspiracy thinking".

Strawman argument. You are putting a strawman on the stage, setting it on fire, and kicking it around the stage. Declaring victory over an argument I never made.

Zombie virus refers to the ability of viruses to survive for long periods of time in the permafrost and still be infectious. Also the fact that since the viruses were not reproducing they were extinct in many ways.

"Smallpox, for example, has a genetic structure that can hold up under long-term freezing, and if people stumble upon the defrosted corpses of smallpox victims, there is a chance they could be infected anew."

Besides, zombie viruses are mostly likely the least of our concerns. You haven't even addressed the scientific consensus, sixth mass extinction, ocean acidification, polar bears drowning and becoming skinny, glaciers shrinking, five million deaths annually, and more.

Yes, you did make the argument. Here is my proof:-
    Zombie viruses could be thawed
You then repeated the same argument in your next post:-
There are zombie viruses thawing in the melting permafrost
Zombie viruses are fictional viruses used to rationalise the plotline of fictional Hollywood movies about zombies. See:-

Day of the Dead is a 2008 American horror film about a virus outbreak that causes people to turn into violent zombie-like creatures.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Day_of_the_Dead_(2008_film)

The Rage Virus, also known simply as (the) Infection, is a fictional disease in 28 Days Later. It is a virulent, bloodborne virus that sends its hosts into a state of extreme, uncontrollable rage.

    https://28dayslater.fandom.com/wiki/Rage_Virus

In the Movie Dawn of the Dead, A rapid infection of the general population breaks out and overnight, transforms the landscape into a post apocalyptic scenario.

The problem here is very simple, Dreamer. You've fallen for sensationalist, wildly inaccurate media language which is being used as clickbait to sell copies of newspapers. It has no basis in reality. Sensationalist journalists commonly use artistic license to arbitrarily make things sound more interesting than they are. Hence, a dormant virus preserved in ice suddenly becomes a "zombie virus".

You should spend some time learning the difference between figurative, sensationalist language and literal, objective language.
