Let's open a can of worms . Our memories control our thoughts, and almost every aspect of our lives, including what we consider free will; or lack of it. I am sure most of us understand that thinking and decision making occurs at the cellular level first, with the neurons firing a split second before we are even consciously aware of it. However, the brain has to have something to base the decision on aside from just external stimuli and that is our memories. I may see a chair and "decide" to sit down, yet that decision is made for me by my memories; the neurons fire; selected sets of memories come up of the many times i sat in the chair, and i sit. What if i decide not to sit? again, memories come up first; of all the times i saw a chair and did not sit. Our memories control all of our decisions and actions a moment before we are aware of doing something. Let us take a baby. He is hungry and fearful, so instinctively he cries. His mom feeds and hugs him; a memory and association is planted in the memory banks. So the next time he is hungry, the decision to cry is made for him. All through life our memories are built up and there would be no decision or thoughts without these memories; aside from simple instinctive behavior, which is not a decision. Our memories control our free will.
