Per the Mariam Webster dictionary, Music is " vocal, instrumental, or mechanical sounds having rhythm, melody, or harmony". Per its definition, anything can be music with any of these traits. Rap does have a vocal melody in rhythmic tones, usually in either harmony or melody. Per the agreed-upon definition in the widest accepted English dictionary, Rap is music.
By your way of thinking ancient people who chanted and waved bones had music. Rap is not music and singing is not music nor is melody and a beat. Music is singing ( or if you prefer, chanting) accompanied by musical instruments such as flutes, pianos, harps, horns and so on. A musical instrument is something that a person plays, not a synthesizer that plays itself. @JoshBailey
@maxx Synthesizer is a musical instrument that generates audio signals that may be converted to sound. Synthesizers may imitate traditional musical instruments such as piano, flute, vocals, or natural sounds such as ocean waves; or generate novel electronic timbres Wikipedia. According to this definition, synthesizer can be a musical instrument.
@maxx When given notes in a melody and played with other synthesizers, each representing a different piece of the melody, could what is produced be considered music? If that is true, I believe the synthesizers that are used to create them are instruments.

lets put it this way; a synthesizer only copies musical instrument; it has no unique sound of its own. what it produces is a mere representation of musical instruments; regardless of any melodies it "plays". would you call a recording of a dog barking the dog itself? @BrainSocks
@maxx Hmm. Reminds me of people viewing a video of a concert, and the people who actually went saying, "You should have been there. It's way better in person."
